I'm thinking about casting shotgun slugs and have a few questions.

1. Can someone recommend a mould (I'll be hunting hogs with them, Mossberg 500A 12ga. rifled bbl)
2. I picked up a Lee Load All press, will this be sufficient?
3. Are there special sabots needed for the slugs
4. Is pure lead recommended or wheel weight lead?

any recommendations and tips are appreciated.

Thanks,
Lunar

I have been casting the Lyman 525 gr sabot slug for over 10 years...I shoot in a rifled slug barrel and cast of pure lead for 2 3/4" loads using Fed Gold Medal Hulls, and use SR4756 powder(load furnished by Lyman with the mold). I get very good accuracy and have killed a bunch of deer in Indiana, Ohio and a handful here in Pa with them... I use Win 12R wads for them(the wad is the sabot in this design).. I loaded hundreds on an old Lyman EZ Loader and now use a Mec... all you need is a good fold crimp... I hand weigh each load... I also have cast out of wheelweights as was suggested by another slug shooter... this load is used in 3" and 2 4/4" loads using rollcrimp in a Fiocchi new primed hull... use BlueDot for powder... I prefer the milder loads using SR4756 and the fold crimp, but they still are somewhere in the area of 1585 FPS.

Hope this helps,

I have a 500c and worked up some good loads. Here are my suggestions:

1) Lee 7/8 oz mold
2) Yes
3)Dont need sabots with the lee 7/8, just wads. You will have to experiment on what works best
4) Wheel weight works great but take your pick.

How about a round ball? A .690 ball weighs 494 grains with pure lead. That might fit in a shot shell.
