I am looking for a good 300 gr .45 caliber cast bullet and load that would give me 1000 FPS out of my 6 inch S&W Model 25 .45 Colt. Any suggestions? I would like something like an LBT WFN style. I would like to first find some cast bullets to try and then find a mould

I have an LBT WFN mold, but it is only 265 grains and gas checked. If you would like to try some, lemme know. I havent even cast with it yet. I also have an Accurate 300 grain plain base that I bought from White Eagle. If you would like to try some of those, I would be happy to cast you some up.

Thanks. I could probably get by with a 265 gr bullet with no problem with less wear and tear on the gun since most deer around here are under 200 lbs and most pigs are around 150 lbs. I have never tried a gas check before.

Where are you located?

I have a 300gr WFNGC mold with a .400 nose, which leaves a lot of room for powder.

I have a few cast up that you can try. They are lubed with LBT blue soft and have Hornady checks on them.

Maybe try around 20gr of H110/296? I shoot 23gr H110 in my 5.5" Ruger and get about 1250fps - but that's probably way too hot for your S&W.

You could try lee's 300 rf gc mold.

You could try lee's 300 rf gc mold.
That is exactly what I was going to post. They have it in a 2 and 6 cavity mold. Until I get a heaver mold in 45 cal that is what I will be using in my 460 S&W

Some good reading for the 45 Colt in an N frame.

I cast a 289gr SWC that shoots one ragged hole from my S&W M25-13, and I cast a 325gr bullet that I use sparingly in the Smith. The SWC is 45-270SAA PB copy from Miha, the 325 is a GC design from Mountain Moulds.

Thanks guys! I have read Linebaugh on the S&W before and have also loaded .45 for a Ruger. I figure most everything I need done can be done at 1000 FPS. I also want to load up some good cast loads for a .45 Rowland. I have a Clark conversion kit for my Sig 1911 and I had the cylinder on the Model 25 cut for moon clips so I could shoot the Rowland and ACP in the .45 Colt cylinder. I have not cast any pistol bullets before but have done many for a .50-70, .45-70 and a .40-70

I can cast you some of the Lee 300gr pills if you want to try them. PM me if you're interested and we'll talk without boring everyone to tears.

I like the lee 300 rnfp gc. It shoots very well out of the rossi 92 and both of my rugers using the Linebaugh load of 24 h110 (Ruger only). . Someday, hopefully, I'll get a chance to hit a pig with it.

Makicjf,
I also use mine in the Rossi 92 and various Rugers, but am starting to use it less and less due to the performance given by 250ish gr cast bullets in my guns. I also haven't had a chance to hunt anything bigger than deer and hog. Have put down a few bigger animals, but those were all close range shots and penetration was sufficient for the job in each case.

I am sure you are right. I guess I caught the bigger is better fever and want to see what those big boolits in front of a pile of h110 actually do on game when launched from the rugers and from the 24 inch rossi. Probobly wreck a bunch of meat. They make an audible THAWACK when they hit paper, even from a 100 yards out with the rifle. I carry the 260's for deer loaded with h11o. :redneck:
When I am hunting from horse back a carry the lee 252 swc over 10 of unique. Much more comfortable to shoot one handed!

I am not saying that the 300gr ers arent worthwhile or dont shoot well, because they do. I honestly started experimenting with the 252 and 255 Lee's because I wanted to see how much performance I could get from a nongaschecked bullet, and it has been plenty for deer and hog. I put one of the 252gr SWC into the forehead of a full grown bull, long story, and it ended that mess, so I am not worried about the performance. I had some 300gr loads with me too, but the 252 was what was in the gun, so when it was over, we tried the 300gr too to check penetration. The 252 was in the liver, the 300 was under the hide at the hip after it had penetrated almost full lenght and broke the hip before stopping, so either works very well for my needs. Both were WDWW btw, as was all my cast stuff back then, and loaded to just barely shy of showing pressure signs. I have started using softer and slower since then, but still have not had a .45 stop in either a deer or a hog from any angle.
