Saw a few new Marlins at the local gun store. One was a 44 mag/spec. As I ahve a few Marlins now I did not look real close except that the 44 seemed to ahve a pretty massive forestock. It was semi smooth and probably would work in. Price tag kind of made me pucker a bit at $600. Just mentioning it.

Local Cabelas had about a dozen 30-30 336W's (birch stock) for $395. Good solid guns. Still kicking myself for passing on that ported (used) Guide Gun. Never know when you'll need a spare, probably the best hunting rifle I own.
Saw a few new 1895 45-70's as well. All looked good at first glance, didn't do any closer inspection due to the safety measures.

Wish I could get one (or a dozen) at that price....
over here a 1894 starts at 679 GBP - that's 1025 USD @ todays exchange rate

Apparently someone involved in Marlin manufacture still seems to think that fat forearms are something to be desired.

Thats $600. for the blued one ? That seems pretty steep to me.
Local shop here just got in a stainless one, priced $629.
Told me he was waiting on blued ones, and should be about $125. less.

I saw two 336s in .30-30 lately. The forearms seemed even more bulbous than the pre-Remington made rifles. The front sights both had "glue" or "epoxy" on each side of the front sights part way down the barrel and the wood at the tang was extremely proud (over 1/8").

No thanks. I'm a Marlin fan, but these new Marlingtons, not so much.
