Can anyone tell me what the little wire spring which fits under the handle is for? Is it necessary/desireable?

Just a theory ,but I think it`s for when ya close the valve if the handle bounces it keeps it from opening thus a leak & to keep the handle smewhat tite in the slot of the rod so ya don`t feel slop in te slot.

GP is right and I believe it's necessary. I wouldn't want mine without the spring

I have one without the spring, works just fine. It will drip sometimes, a light push down of the handle stops the drip.

I've never had mine bounce, don't think it ever will.
