The boolit I'm casting is supposed to be a 228 gr RN. I've never cast these before, but they look good, properly filled out, no holes or other noticible boo-boos, but they are all weighing 220 to 222 gr. after sizing and lubing. Is there a way to get heavier boolits out of this mold or do I just live with it. Oh...Clip on wheel weights, 10 pound Lee production pot full and a piece of lead free, silver solder about 8 inches long off the roll. I don't really think 6 gr is going to make that much of a difference but I am curious as to is there anything I could do to reach the advertised weight.

I'm surprised the weight is lower, usually mine come out heavier. You could mix COWW 50/50 with pure lead for more weight, but not sure how much more. I've seen several posts by people that use the 50/50 mix.

why bother you get a free boolit every ten pours from a 2 cav mold.
weight isn't a big deal unless it's 10-20 grains

Shoot them like they are 6-8 grs won't make much of a diff.

I always like it when they cast a little lighter.

I remember I read somewhere that stated weight for molds were "ballpark" figure based on the calculated, thus theoretical, volume of the cavity given in pure lead, which incidently is a little heavier than lead alloy.

Dont fret over it. It's probably just a combination of your alloy specific weight and cavity size. If they all come out approx. the same weight, you are good to go. Welcome to casting. Once you start, you never go back. :castmine:

228 RN sounds like a .45 I use 3 parts lead and 1 part WW. BHN of 10-12 after cast and water drop. More lead =more weight but smaller diameter so check your as cast diameter and as lead as needed

I do not care if the bullet is a little lighter of heavy . I look at my manuels and and compare tht data and the weight they have for the same bullets . Like the test is for lino and the orther one is for #2 alloy and the powder is the same weight . I do not go for the weight really just the Diameter . I say that because of when I cast some that can be use for 9mm and 38spl and 357 I find that some alloys that i use was smaller then some orthers in dia . So I check and use one size that is above or close to the size of 38 and 357 then use them for them and 9mm . and the ones below I use for 9mm only.

The simple answer to your question is use more lead.

The mold weight is based on aether a #2 alloy or pure lead used in that mold and is based on the theoretical Perfect mold under perfect conditions, so weights will be different.

All alloys have different density and hardness the reason everyone has a favorite. If you change anything in your mix you change the weight of the boolet. No big deal just be sure to check the as cast weight and load accordingly.

Thanks guys...yeah, like I thought, not a big deal. Just wanted to satisfy my curiosity.

Put a gas-check plate on that mold and you will get heavier boolits for sure.

When you order a mold from Accurate Molds, there is a spot on the online form where you select the alloy you'll be using, presumably so Tom can adjust the cavity size to produce boolits of the correct weight.

Using pure range lead will drop heavier.

I wonder what others have reported, using the same mold...
