View Full Version : Lee slug and cream of wheat filler

I am loading some 7/8 oz Lee slugs and noticed that the slug goes to far into the wad. My question is can I use Cream of Wheat as a filler? 2nd question, can I pour the CoW on top of the slug to fill the wad or should I put it under the slug like a nitro card. This is using the data that came with the mold WAA wad with HS6 powder in AA hulls.

Hello there, either or works.Myself I put a card under the slug to stop the wad jamming into the base,COW on top just enough to cover the slug and then a .030 thou card on top and crimp.Seems weird that the Lee recipe doesn,t form a good column height. Now in 20 gauge I put COW under and over a round ball and it works just dandy. Good luck,Mike

Hello 1st Skink, you can put the COW, but it will still not give the slug a firm solid base that the nitro card will give!

Most shooters stop at 33 gr of HS-6 due to its heavy recoil!

Buy and use the original wads and no copies as they will not stand up to the high pressures!
Here is Fed.12S0 wad with a great fit if you use a nitro card!

This hobby is suppose to be fun, let the fun begin.
Hope it helps.

What would happen if put the COW on top to fill out the wad? I keep hearing of wads sticking to the slug, but know what effect this has on accuracy. Thanks on the powder charge heads up. My chart said 38g of HS6. I was going to load it less than 38g, but not that much lower.

Good morning 1st Skink, any wad should not tag along for a piggy ride for accuracy purposes, what we need is instant release of the slug the moment it exits the barrel, yet I too have noticed the wads at 25 to 50 yard mark. ideally the Sabot or wad should be found some 10 to 14 yards from where you shoot from.
Try a few with COW to fill the top part of the wad and a few with a 1/8 and 1/4 inch hole at the bottom of the wads from a hole puncher to weaken the wad petals for instant release!

Having a nitro card of .125 in wad below the slug is important to give the slug a firm base and to help in a quicker release!

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip, VdoMemorie! I will try the hole punch method first with the COW. I will look at the .125 nitro card later if I can find them or make them.
