Have a chance to pick up a 336AW for a few $250. I was wondering if it is worth it and if they are any good.

IMHO, any functioning pre-remington Marlin Lever gun that is not overtly rusted out and without broken furniture is worth $250. If it is a clean working gun with some justifiable wear on it, I would give $250 for it.

Are they any good? Again IMHO this is one of the all time Great Companion Guns. They are not bench rest guns, and they are not black guns, but, the the Marlin 30-30 killed many deer and black bear over the last 100 years. They are a great hunting rifle for the piney woods. The new LEVEREVOLUTION ammo has bumped out the effective range to 200 yards for hunting deer sized game.

If you hand load, you can have a BALL with 30-30. I recommend anyone loading for a Marlin 30-30 take a look at the RD 311-165RF mold. This bullet was specifiically made to fit the Marlin 336 30-30's. It can also be purchased as "store-bought" but you will have to check the Ranch Dog Outdoors website to find the link to the company producing the RD bullets for commercial sale.

I hope this helps... thanks rc

They make good cast bullet guns too, even the micro groove barrels.

+1 to Dan Cash. I only switch to jacketed if the game (hunting) requires it. I will say that the Gummie Tips need to be kept on hand for when you really need some extra range. rc

Looked at one just yesterday @ Wallymart and the price tag read $387.99. So $250.00 sounds mighty fair.

If it has a good bore, throat and chamber.... 250 is excellent price. You can easily put a 4X scope on it to check potential accuracy. Very rare is a Marlin 336 that won't shoot extremely well with Jbullets. That will check the accuracy potential. Leave the scope on to work up best cast load. Once determined take the scope off and replace with a good receiver sight and presto! Top rate, handy cast bullet shooter.

Jerry at http://www.carolinacastbullets.com/ and they are good. If not broken or rusted, get it.

I picked uo a new Marlin 336 straight stock in '69 for $78, installed a Weaver K2.5 on it for $34 and the pair are still together. It was the first center fire rifle I ever bought and probably the only one I really ever needed for hunting, but wanting got the best of me and I've bought a lot more since then and traded and sold a few but, that 336T is still my favorite and will be with me 'til the end. If you can pick one up that shoots for $250, go for it, you won't be sorry. The next Marlin I got in a trade, a 45/70 Guide gun with ported barrel and it's definitely a keeper too.
