Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce to you, General William Tecumseh Sherman, AKA "Mr. Bill", my gun room cat. Mr. Bill hangs out in here with me on a regular basis.

He edits my posting here on the forum, keeps an inventory of brass, boolits, primers and powder and helps me drink my sour mash whiskey. He is very particular in seeing that all firearms are kept clean and in good working order.

He is a thoroughbred Maine Coon and doesn't put up with any foolishness here in the gun room. He will tell you all are welcome. However, if you start anything, he WILL escort you to the property line and the point of a loaded shotgun.

Jim, We can always use an extra paw in our projects. I've wanted a Maine Coon but we keep getting other cats so I think my chances are getting slim. Besides, he would have to be a rescue cat and that reduces the odds even more.

Mr. Bill and his brother, George (named after my father) are rescue cats. They were found roaming the streets of Floyd and taken in by the SPCA. We adopted the pair of them. I'm sure glad we did, too, 'cause they have the biggest time playing together.

Nice cat Jim! Sadly my cats are not allowed in the basement, so they can't help me reload.

As you can tell by my pic I'm owned by cats. The one in the pic is now gone several years ago, but we are now the staff of two. One is nice and quiet and old, the other is young and will eat or tear up paper and cardboard and bat around anything that is movable. She is not allowed in the gun room unless I am in there with her. Just not safe, and I like to find my stuff, too.

As you can see by my avatar, I have a gun room cat as well. Mia is small but fierce and keeps me and the dog in our place with the assistance of my beloved.

She also critiques my AR builds:

And keeps my rifle cases warm:

All in all she's a very helpful cat.

I have one who must be trying to reload when I sleep. I frequently find the deburring tool or powder scale pan in the living room. I am pretty sure Montana is the culprit. I keep telling her she can't reload because she doesn't have thumbs. I have several cats and they are all my buddies.

I have a shop cat and his name is Murphy. He is a rescue. He is not much help, but lots of good company. I have two other cats (Beamer and Chuy) but they show little interest in hanging out in the shop.

You guys haven't got a good start yet, I have 16 cats!

We live on a farm on a back ridge in Tn well away from the "beaten path" and these are (for the most part anyway) working cats who actually earn their keep. Some of them were abandoned cats, both kittens and full grown, but we bought a couple of Himalayans. I was always kind of cool to the idea of having cats around, didn't particularly dislike them I just didn't care much for them either. When my daughter was still at home she found a kitten someone had abandoned and the rest is history! I was amazed at a cat's personality and although each are unique it seems most are fascinating, I also discovered they are far more intelligent than I previously thought. So how come I wound up with so many? It's those danged kittens! Few critters in the world are cuter than a kitten and we just could not turn away a scared and hungry kitten!

This brings me to another subject, those disgusting idiots, and I do mean IDIOTS, that will abandon kittens and puppies. I would like to lock these these people in a cage and starve them for a week or so and see how they like it! :x

All of our cats have been "worked on" and we don't allow unwanted kittens to happen, still the occasional kitten seems to find it's way up the hill to our place (strange that we rarely ever get a dog/puppy). When this happens we segregate it from the rest of what my wife refers to as "the herd" until we can have it vet checked for one of the many viral infections that seem to afflict cats. I f it checks out ok, and most do, we set about trying to find it a home but if we can't it usually just ends up staying and several have done just this becoming almost part of the family.

About the diseases, if you really care for your pet NEVER, EVER allow it to come into contact with an unknown animal no matter how brief the contact or how healthy the newcomer seems to be. It's sometimes tempting if an abandoned kitten shows up on a doorstep to at least feed it but if it is carrying FIV or one of the other common viruses the infection is all too easy to spread, not saying to turn it away just be careful!

Got four female cats, all rescues or strays that we have adopted, or that have adopted us. We're city folks, and our cats are indoor only animals. Cats and cars don't mix well. A couple of them will come into the gun room in the basement when I'm working there, but I kind of discourage it after I've done depriming and before I sweep up. I don't want them getting primer residue on their paws and then licking it. Usually one or more is on my desk or looking out the office window when I'm in there working.

We just lost our Birman a week ago, she was one month short of 22 years old. She is missed needless to say.

oldred,

I have heard that when you have that many cats you can offically use the title " crazy cat person " when refering to yourself. I'm working on getting the title myself . So far 6 cats have wandered up to the house, hung around awhile then moved in and started calling it home. I can't figure out why we keep getting them . The only thing my wife insists on is everybody has to be fixed, except me thank God. Blessed with cats, no mice problem.

You can tell a lot about a man that enjoys the company of cats. Looks like I'm in good company! We have four, two of them are my gunroom kitties. One I picked from an unwanted litter 9 years ago, one was thrown out of a car at the end of our driveway as a kitten four years ago, one is an older cat that wandered up injured and hungry a couple of years ago (I think he fell out of a passing RV, he was someone's dearly loved cat but had no collar and no ID chip), and the most recent one my wife saved from the gas chamber at the county pound.

Now, if I can just figure out how to make a boolit lube that cat hair won't stick too......

While we lived out in the mountains, we owned a cat that what I would describe as mildly retarded.....just a very gentle, trusting cat. That's not a good quality for a pet living around coyotes, foxes, owls, and mountain lions. He loved to come in my loading room while I was busy, but never entered if I wasn't there. Surprisingly, he lived for 22 years, deaf as a post for the last 5 of those years. We had a female mountain lion with two kittens hanging around, and one morning I found our kitty's yellow fur scattered all over the yard. In a way it was a relief, I knew I was going to have to put him down soon and was dreading the day.

Here is mine a Russian Blue named Katie. A regular in every room. We also have to Manx brothers named Bird and Dog (don't ask I didn't name they but a 4 year old grandson did and the last picture).
