i have been in the planning stages of a couple of projects now and am ready to move to the buying steel stage. i work with a local fab shop to get steel from time to time if they have some left overs from another project. i have a great local tubing supplier. i dont know where to get bar stock. i would like to find a supplier of cold rolled and 4130/4140/4340 in the columbus ohio area. i feel silly ordering what i need from ebay since im sure i should be able to find it cheaper. i am not opposed to ordering from out of state but sometimes i just need a few small pieces and dont want to pay shipping. does someone have a suggestion of where i should look?
specifically, right now i need a piece of 1 inch round bar to make a modified ram for my press. i would like to build a swaging press later and will need some rather big flat bar stock.

There's probably someplace local, cheaper, but I often use McMaster Carr for small amounts, easy to order.

When I have been looking for a source I always talk to somebody who works in industrial maintenance or tool and die, they always need stuff like that so they know who to buy from. Unfortunately I don't have any friends still in the central Ohio area, working....

Talk to you friends at the "local fab shop"
the problem is many suppliers will not
deal in "Retail"...But you may get your
"local fab shop" friends to order it for you.

I've worked at two companies (as an electrician)
were there was a metal shop, and have had them order
special stuff for me, But I've been charged
a "order fee", even though I worked there.

I often use MSC for steel and many other products. You have an outlet in the Columbus area. Here's a link as to location.

Why not try a local scrapyard?

We used Alro steel quite a bit when I was in business. I do not know their retail policy though.

You could always try Yarde metals for light gauges or Contractors Steel for heavier material.

Might check to see if there is a "Metal Supermarket" in your area, a Corp. owned metals supplier that will cut any size metal that they carry.

I use them here a lot.
