I did not need it, was not looking for it, I have enough, BUT- My ol' buddy that works at one of the local shops part time said I needed to come by and look at something. I show up this morning and he pulls from the back a 336 he thinks I should look at. Looks new and the closer it gets I see the waffle top, now in my hands I rolled her over and opened lever. The big E starting the #'s. first year 336 round bolt. At fifty I fully understand the want/need thing and the stupid valve that has flipped on me at a show or two, well it was to much to overcome. The only thing I can see, front RH nose cap screw slot booger and very faint scratch in wood front of pistol grip. I would rate at strong 99%, bore mint, no scratching on bolt, I do not think a box or so if that. Butch's nine hours later nothing. The lever Gods smiled on me today, 311041 is already out. Wife was over it years ago, buddies voice mailed, could not hold it in anymore- Thanks for listening. Gtek

Sounds like the story of me buying the 1892 Marlin in .32 Long Colt today at our little gunshow. Like I needed another Marlin.............

Since when has NEED been part of the equation? Congrats to you both on your acquisitions.

If you'd care to discuss needs , I'd be glad to stop by your house with a large truck and remove everything you don't need . You will be pleased to know that I have need priorities in line and you will be keeping your new Marlin ( and several other firearms ) along with your casting and loading gear .

Now about sleeping on the floor ..... don't worry about that after a few days of nothing but Ramen noodles you'll get used to it

At fifty you need to enjoy life a bit , congrats with a quality rifle

First rule of business: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Second rule of business: Procurement is more important than dispersal.

you got real lucky, enjoy the day!

I think once you reach fifty, you ought to be able to get what you want. My wife just shakes her head now days.

A find like that trumps any want/need discussion. I think you owe your buddy lunch!

Awesome find! I have a 1949 waffle top 336 and love it. Although isn't as nice I am sure, and when I found mine it had already had the top drilled probably years ago. But I was thrilled to have found it anyways!

Have fun with the new 63 year old gun!

What, pray tell is a waffle top?

 You are grasshopper in world of Marlin!
It's a wavy engraving on the top of the receiver to reduce glare, it was only used for about the first four or so years (I don't feel like getting my Brophy "Bible" to see the exact duration) production of the 336, it was replaced with a matt finish on later rifles. Of the 18 Marlins in my safe only one is a "Waffle Top"

I don't meem to be picky but waffles don't have wavy lines. By the way I do have three Marlins. I posted pics in April.
