Guy locally posted a 586 for sale, 500 dollars. 6 inch, Hogue rubber grips. Still waiting for answer to it being a no dash, -1, -2, etc. Says it has a 3 prefix meaning the firing pin has been updated. Looks 95+ condition by the picture. Still has original box. Sound possible, or leave it alone for that price? Thanks.

I thought the letter "M" stamped in meant the gun had been cleared for firing pin.

I'd pay $500 depending on condition.

I am not sure personally what the M stands for. According to him, that's what it stands for. Checked my mods 19, 25, 29 , and 36, and they have no M.

Checked wikipedia. If it had been recalled by Smith for the early safety/hammer modification, it would be stamped M. Not sure what he means about the "3" prefix. Am still researching.

$500 for a 586 x 6" seems fair to me, if in the condition you describe.

There was an issue with the first 586 using hot loads. Caused brass to extrude into the firing pin hole. It would cause the gun to lock up. If you sent it in or had a S&W warranty station do the fix then the letter M was stamped in. My 586 no dash has the letter M. Later models (not sure which dash) had this problem corrected before leaving the factory.

Buy the 586. You won't regret it. If you do I am sure you can make your money back easily.

What he meant was its a 586-3. Would have saved some confusion if that was how he stated it to begin with. I would not call the "-3" a prefix.

I'd buy it in a heart beat if the condition was 95% or better. Last one I saw for sale was 550 and had some freckling on the barrel and side plate.

Missed out. By the time he got back to me again, it was to tell me it was already sold. Thanks for the advice guys. Maybe I will have better luck next time.

Hey, give me my luck back! That's usually the way it goes for me. I'll see something that seems like a good deal, I'll know that its a good deal, but I figure I can come back to it.... Oh well, better luck next time.

Talk about bad luck but last year I walked in to my store and there was a 5 inch Model 27 with the wood box, papers and unopened cleaning kit on consignment for $600.00 in very good condition. I had a 220 Sig on consignment that had not sold or it would have been mine. Wife and I have a firm agreement about using home funds for guns since I have so many of them.

The stamped M will only appear on models 581/586 or 681/686 and dash 1 of those models. It does not appear on Mdl 19s, Mdl 10s, Mdl 25s etc., or dash 2 on of the L frame series. Aslo it will only appear if the gun had been returned to s&W for the modification. I have a 581 and a 681 no dash, that do not have the M stamp. They both work fine. The Problem was only with a certain brand of high pressure 125gr ammo, and only affected a few pistols. If it works fine, don't try and fix it is my motto. Depending on where you live $500.00 is a fair price, if the pistol is in excellent condition.

I sold one, same description except it was an un-'M'olested no-dash, a few months ago along with the original grips for $550.

I have been looking for a 586 and would gladly pay $500. They just aren't around in my neck of the woods.
