Anybody have a 200gr. ish bullet and load that works well in 45 colt? Just a plinker type with decent accuracy. I was given some (I'm assuming) 45 acp bullets that weigh out right at 196gr. not sure if it's two lube groove or if whoever cast and sized them got lube in the crimp goove. Anyway only tried a few powders so far, HS6 (up to 12gr) Trailboss (6.5gr) 231 (8.2gr). the ones that shot well so far was the Trailboss and a load of 10.5gr HS6 (very dirty but very accurate) Shooting from a Ruger BBH. it appeared that the 12 gr. HS6 load was tumbling, ragged tears in the target...?? I shot a few of these through my 4in RH, it doesn't seem to like this bullet at all...

In my experience the 200gr is just too short for the .45.colt. I'm sure someone has put the time in to make the 200gr shoot well. for me it is was much easier to get loads from mouse fart to moose blaster in the 290-340 in the .45

The 200 gr. RNFP is all I shoot in .45 Colt, since I'm just punching paper and dinging steel with them. I've found TrailBoss to be very accurate with this bullet in both revolvers and my Marlin 1894CB in .45 Colt. Ironically, this bullet turned out to work great in the .45 acp, as well.

Hope this helps.

I shot some Lee 200 RNFP sized to .452 in my Blackhawk this week with 11 grs of AA#5. Grouped well at 25 yds with no leading. Very nice load, not to hot and not to anemic.

My favorite load for 45 colt is from a Lee 200g RN mold. It's a single cavity made for blackpowder and I lapped it open to .454. Ben's Red lube and 7g of AA Nitro 100.

Thanks for the replys fellas. I've never shot much of anythng less than 250s in the 45 colt. (think I did a little foray into the 230gr years ago) I prefer bullets in the 250/270 size, they shoot well and have all the oomph I'll ever need. But....if I can find a good one at 200 for practice and can hunting, well, more bullets for the same amount of lead used for casting...purely economics..it's worth a little more work on my part I think...

8.5gr unique under a lyman 452460 200gr SWC. Crimped in lube groove or over driving band works the brass quite a bit. Crimped on band like a 45acp works. Accurate easy shootin.

I use a Lee 200 gr RF in both the 45 colt and 45 ACP. It works great in both. The large flat nose punches nice round holes in paper and if you shot any game with it it would produce a good wound channel I am sure. In the 45 colt my cowboy and plinking load is 5 gr of red dot and for higher velocity I use 9 gr of Unique. It works well in both my Rossi lever gun and my Uberti colt clones.

I've got an SAECO H&G 68 copy that has done just finein my Ruger Vaquero. I've used 7.5 grains of WW-231 and 8.6 grains of Unique to good effect, both grouping better than the factory WW 250 grainers. The only fly in the ointment has been that both loads shoot low.

Some powders burn dirty if they aren't crimped, sounds like yours doesn't have a crimp groove & might be the problem, still many people can make them work in a 45 Colt with the powders you mention. Might try crimping over the ogive & see if it cleans up a bit.

I haven't shot many "light-for-caliber" boolits from the 45 Colt BisHawk. I did try some of the Lee copy of the H&G #68, and they shot well, but a little low for the sights at 800-850 FPS. They would make a good rat/varmint load.......less alloy per shot, it's already 45 caliber, etc.

When I first got moulds #454190 and #454424, I was a little surprised at their relatively short, squatty profile. The RCBS 270 "looks" more like what a 45 Colt SWC should resemble.
