I have a roll of moss control zinc strip, It is 2 3/4" wide x 50' long and .010" thick.
99.9% pure.
Would it make good gas checks?

I could still use the rem for moss control!

I suppose it would make gas checks but it would surely contaminate your berm.

For years there have been zinc washers used on the base of bullets to prevent leading, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use your zinc material for gas checks. If it will form well, and not wear out the tool, then it should work.

Hope this helps.

I asked the same question a couple years ago. I just didn't know if it would form well.I got answers like "I don't know" and "it's probably steel" (even though it states 99.9% zinc just like yours). I didn't want to wast $30 on a roll at the time, but the hardware store I saw it at no longer carries it. If you already have it it won't hurt to cut off a strip and try. Read up on suphar fluxing if you worry about zinc when mining the berm.

I don't have a berm to mine so that shouldn't be an issue.
I have read that a zinc coating on the bore will prevent leading so it seems like a reasonable material choice.
I currently put a little HBN in the lube and I have no leading issues but more protection is always better.

Keep us all informed on if they form well, crimp to the bullet well, etc.

Try and cut a few, but you might find .010 a little loose on your boolits.

I found I had to go to .014 before they would stay on after sizing.

I have a Galvanised bore....

This whole idea is galvanising....

And here I was reluctant about aluminum pot marks before I started using abloominum....

I recall seeing Zinc gas checks being auction off on fleabay not to long ago. They were factory made checks so I don't see why you should have any problems other than the fitting issue that's already been mentioned.

You would not be welcomed to shoot those things into my berm, but if you do not mind contaminating the future lead miners supply at the berm you shoot at....go for it...it should work.
