Just got a new Natchez catalog yesterday and looked up the price of 2400 as I'm getting low.
Eight pounds was $117.99. Then I looked at the price of Accurate 5744 as it has been running higher than other powders of this speed, just curious.
Eight pounds is $178.49!

That is $60.50 more for 5744. I don't think it is that special.

IMR SR4759 largest container is #4 for $65.49 so that is $130.98 for #8.

Now that I am loading more of my rifle cartridges on the Lee Classic Turret press I'm going away from the 4759 and using more 2400 with the same results. 2400 just measures more accurately thru the Lee powder measure.

I too am a big fan of 2400, in pistol and rifle loads.

I don't know the why of 5744's recent price increase. I use a lot of 2400, too, but a couple rifles prefer 5744. My frugality and 5744 don't mix very well and I cringe each time I cycle the Lyman 55.

I am a die hard 2400 fan. I use more of that powder with cast in rifles than all other powders combined.

There is no doubt that 5744 is expensive, but it does meter better than 4759 (doesn't EVERTHING else?). 2400 is inexpensive as rifle powders go. I like 5744 in the 30-06 and 7.5x55 due to their largish capacity.

Excess, is right about 5744. It used to be my favorite CB rifle powder with respect to performance and metering, but never price. What little experience I've had with 2400 in rifles has been very favorable as well: harder to meter, but accurate results and clean burning too.

I settled on 2400 some years back for my usel. I like 4759 and still have quite a bit of it. I won't replace it when it is gone.

I am not saying that 2400 is the be all and end all of cast bullet powders. But does a very good job, with anything I ask it to do.

I have shot very little 5743, price was always a big turnoff.
2400 is good in rifles large and small, works well in handguns too.

I like a multitasker.

Just last month i was buying 2400 and 4895 through powder valley and saw that 5744 cost over $60 more then 2400.
I said to self, the heck with 5744 i'm buying extra primers with the savings.

Have you noticed that all fast burners are more expensive than slower?

Most of our group have come to the same conclusion with calibers such as 8mm, 30-06 and 30-40 Krag. While 5744 does very well with cast bullets in these calibers so does 2400. A friend that just bought a 7mm mag. was unable to find any 2400 data with cast bullets but did fine some 5744 data so he may be stuck with that powder as his group was less than 1 in. at 100 yards. 5744 is pricing itself into a position with shooters of which no other powder works with a case/bullet combination.

What does make one wonder is why is 5744 so much more expensive than other powders? There must be a reason. Materials used? Place of Manufacture?

I just do not know why that one powder would be so much more expensive than other powders.

I had written to Accurate and they said it is a very special powder that is difficult to manufacture. Yeah, right!
They also said it is one of their best sellers. Mike V. must burn an awful lot ot it!

I have less than 1/2 pound left. when it is gone that will be it.

I like 5744, but sure don't like the price, so-----shoot very little of it. Shoot a lot of 2400, and buy it in bulk.
