Hello Monge, the Lee Drive Key slug costs 1/4 of the Lyman 525 slug mold with handles.
Its safe to say Lee slug is a good to 70 to 75 yards, when loaded properly and fired from a rifled barrel, but the Lyman 525 is good to 100 yards, provided you do your part.
The Lee is a short and stubby slug, just as round as it is long, a bumble bee!
You can change the dimentions and make it a bit longer, then the Lee can become good to 100 yards

Guess what the base hollow pins are only $1.50 from Lee play around, be creative.

Midsouth has the best prices for Lee bullet molds!
Hope it helps.

I modified mine with a deburring tool, it is now a truncated cone instead of a RN and shoots great. Doesn't hurt that it also weighs a bit more.

VM, I was thinking about making a new base plug, extending the slug like you did, and eliminating the key drive and
shortening the tip of the plug to make it more weight foreward.

Sorry I didn't notice the bottom part of your post........
