I need a round ball mould for a .40 caliber flintlock. .395 or perhaps .397. Lyman does not list a mould for the .40 cal. I would prefer a cast iron mould or perhaps brass. Anybody know of a mould maker for a .40 cal. besides the NEI. Just looking for options.

Thanks

Hey there.
For future reference, my .395" Lee round ball mold throws .396" across the seam and .397" at 90 degrees to the seam. So, perhaps LEE may be the answer. Planning on trying it in a fast twist forty with narrow lands to see if it will work with round ball.

I just looked in the Mid South catalogue what a shock, no Lyman 40s. They did have Lee at .395.
What is your barrel. I am using a Lyman .400 with 0.0020 patching in my Green Montian barrel.

The barrel is a green mountain. I would like to stay away from a Lee mould as I have no experience with aluminum.

Been using Lee molds for years & no problems.I heat mine on top my
pot while the leads in melting, & it's ready to pop balls out right away.

I'm with Dirt Farmer, I use a .400RB in my Montana barreled 40 with .015 patching. Shoots way better than I can.

Lee round ball molds are very easy to use , just clean with starting fluid or brake clean then smoke with a few matches and lube the sprue plate when hot with a bit of 2 stroke oil on a qtip

and the balls just fall out

the only problem with lee round ball molds is they don't make them in a 6 cavity mold

Jeff Tanner over in England makes whatever size RB mould you want. Made of brass and the most accurate mould I've ever used. They are a little different but well worth the experience. Google Jeff Tanner and moulds. He'll cut whatever you want.

i use .395 with .020 patches in my .40.

nothing wrong with a lee mold i cast with a lee and a layman. they both shoot the same. infact the lee has less of a sprue then the layman.
