1886 Win Reproduction worth?

Have a chance to pickup a Browning 1886 Japan reproduction in 45-70.
No engravding. Real nice wood with pistol grip stock. Anyone have one they
would tell me about. Gentleman bought in in 1980, never been fired. No box.
Is it worth the $850 he is offering it to me?
Just found out it's not a Browning, it's winchester rifle with pistol grip; new in
red box with paper work...never been fired...will purchase!

Compared to what I've been seeing them sell for it's a steal. I wouldn't take less than 1250.00 for my ELR model which includes a micrometer sight added and custom checkering.

Based on the relative cost of things lately and if you want a Model 1886 and don't mind that it came from Japan I would say thats an excellent price . Heck I think the last couple plain jane Marlin 1895CB's I saw sold went for $700 plus USED !

I would think the Browning 1886 would be a bit more collectible then a Marlin 1895CB ;-)

i'd like to see pics of that. i have three Browning 1886's. I thought and am pretty sure 1986 was the year of manufacture. I've never seen a Browning repro with a pistol grip. lever action repeater or 1885 single shot?

airc i paid right at 1,000 for mine, but it was LN without a box [dangit] i shoot it so no big deal about the box thing.

seaside: They made a long octagon barrel model with pistol grip and that nasty curved steel butt plate. They are heavy enough to dampen recoil quite a bit but you have to watch the points on the butt plate. Assume that is what he may have.

i have the long octagon and curved buttplate but the straight grip.
i had a model 71 that had the pistol grip.

Mines a Browning (Miroku) saddle ring carbine, round 20in barrel, straight stock, brutal metal crescent buttplate. As far as them being made in Japan, Winchester certainly never built anything to this quality..Browning maybe..

the miroku/win thing was a good one if you bought the miroku version.
they were cherry picking the wood, and spending the time on the parts fitting. and then just pumping out the win version.

I will have to say those jap made are well made. Bought the light weight and the 26 in octagon and I am very pleased with them. Happily I bought when they were in the $800 area. Fine shooting and that light weight is great for hauling about the woods and ditches stalking the mighty ground hog in ILLinois when I am up there..

Its well worth $850, but the story about it being bought in 1980 isn't close to being true. Browning brought out the 1886 again in 1986 with straight grip and octagon barrel in both standard and high grade. The rifle was followed up with the round barreled carbine, again, in both grades. The Winchester version didn't reappear until after Browning bought Winchester.

I bought my Browning 1886 in 1986 at Wisner's Gun Shop, Ada Washington for $625 plus tax. I have never regretted it. As stated in the previous post the first ones were only with 26" octagonal barrel and straight grip with rifle crescent buttplate. I had mine restocked with a Winchester shotgun style buttplate, much more pleasant to shoot. They have a short throat, which is perfect for flat nosed cast bullets. I shoot paper patched Lyman 457122 (Gould) HP and solid using the "Keith" load. Very accurate. Also shoot the RCBS 405gr flat nose, but recoil is is significantly greater. They are beautiful rifles and shot very well. The rifling in mine is a wide land - wise groove style.

Yes I bought it, picked it up yesterday. I'll try to post pictures. It's not a Browning
it's a US Repeating Arms Company, says Winchester and made in Japan.
