View Full Version : How Many Boolits Cast in June?

bowfin

Provisional Final Total: 83,878!!!

Suffering slightly (a lot) from Obsessive-Compulsive behavior, I like lists and like to count things. So let's try this, for those interested:

During the month of June, this thread will keep track of how many boolits the posters of the thread actually cast. Don't count the rejects that go back into the pot.

This will give us three weeks of conjecture on what the total might be, and ideas on what to track, such as (maybe) calibers, for which cartridges, maybe even total weight of booltis cast.

All ideas welcome.

Well it certainly should be broken down into calibers. Rifle, Pistol, Revolver.
Don't know if I will have much to report in June because that is a busy month for gardening and other outside work around here before it gets too hot. This may be a better thing to do in a winter month like January. Although I cast all year round I do cast more in the winter, not much elso to do except cuddle up with the coal stove.

Well, the best part of this is that once we have a benchmark month, we can run it again some other month.

I myself would rather smelt (yep, I said smelt) in the summer outside and then cast inside during the winter.

I like the idea since I tend to be a bit on the OCD side of the coin, but from now until about November, my monthly casting count will be zero. It's already getting in the low to mid 90s here in the sunny South and it's just too hot to stand in front of a pot of molten alloy when outside temps are pushing 100F and garage temps will be significantly higher.

But come November - February I'll do my usual cool weather casting to support our shooting habits for the Winter and the coming Summer months. I just don't cast on a monthly basis because of the heat, but rather opt for a seasonal routine.

Are you interested in certain calibers, or just general casting across the board ?

Let's say caliber and weight.

Let's also say that the hardcore casters can give an honest estimate if they don't count each and every individual boolit they cast. No one should spend an hour counting that could be put to more profitable use.

Can the weight also be the amount the total boolits per caliber weigh?

Here lately I have simply been pouring up a full Lee 4-20 pot or two full, through different molds getting ready to work up and load up this falls hunting rounds.

If you had posted this for April I would be close to 150# worth already.

Hmm, I have a 2 week layoff in June, so when I'm not out riding the chopper, I'll most likely be casting a bunch for the .380 and 40. Unless the honey do list grows more tasks.

I have been learning how to cast with one of Mihic's molds, the brass 4 cavity and it's heavy.
After figuring the heat thing out with this sucker I have done 700 hollow points so far.
Hope to get some 30 and 314 done in the coming days.

if i cast anything it will be some 30 cal boolits [the bucket is at almost half] and maybe some 45-70 boolits if i get to them.
more than likely it'll be some cores for swaging that'll be cast.
i need to get the last of my ww's ingoted, and some alloy mixed up.
now, nov-march,then there'll be some casting going on.

I cant help you with figures for the mounth of June as i only cast bullets in Febuary when your stuck in the house! in the month of Febuary i usually cast /lube & size at least 10,000 bullets. this past Febuary i did 20,286 counted by weight.

I'd be fine with June. I do all my casting and smelting outside - so, I don't mind the heat. My ProMelt likes to freeze up at the spout if it's the least bit cold and I take even a short break. 80's work real well for me. enjoy Mike

It was 30 degrees this morning at 6:30 when I went out to the barn and let the horses out, so casting in the heat isn't a problem around here, YET..last month I did probably 3-400 158gr RNFP .358's and around 500 .454's. Who knows about next month?? Boltons will be riding his chopper when it warms up, I'll be riding the tractor...that doesn't seem quite fair to me..besides I never count how many bullets I cast, I just go until I don't want to do anymore and quit. I grew up spending my summer's at my grandpa's farm. It's where I got my mechanical know how from, and my work ethic. Anyway, I'm in Michigan, it's not guaranteed to be warm in June. I do miss the days of driving the old john deeres around the farm though.

By June it'll be hot enough out here in Phoenix, AZ to cast boolits without the need of a heat source. Just leave the lead in a pot on the sidewalk and you'll be casting in minutes. :D

I've been finishing up my last minute casting this week... still have a few .44 mag to put together then I'm done till at least October.

i'm good with any month between the wednesday of the second full week in february till the wednesday of the second full week in november. the rest will be spent finding fur, besides i cast outside and in the winter it's real hard to get the pot hot enough to pour.

i figured it up though i can cast 250ish (#225450) keepers in one hour, but i'll break it down by caliber and cartridge or front stuffer

I am new to casting, only been doing it now for 3 months and probably already have about 3,000 to 4,000 bullets casted in various caliber. I have been doing .309, .358, .356 and .452 so far and plan on doing .401 here by mid June. This sounds like it could be fun. I do all my smelting and casting outside, especially since I live in a mobile home and getting good ventilation during casting process would be difficult. The only issue I have is that if it rains...well no casting since everything is setup without a roof overhead.

June is way to hot here in deep south Texas for casting. Typically 100* weather already. This month I finished my yearly cast. I don't have boolit counts but I have decreased my ingot supply by almost 300 pounds. Boolits are all pistol in 9mm, 357, 40S&W & 45acp.

Next I will be lubing indoors with the AC running.

After reading Bobthenailers count, I'm out. I live in South Florida. If I casted over 20,000 boolits in a month you would find me melted in my garage. I casted only about 200- 45 calibers tonite and I sweated out about a gallon.

I have far better things to do than count how many bullets I cast, like cast, lube, and shoot them. I'd guess it will be in the mid hundreds.

Well, I cast about 400 in May. That'll go up in June.

bowfin
05-31-2012, 05:48 PM
I have some .32 HBWC to cast, and then some pointy .135 grain .357s to cast, then it is on to some .41 Keiths, and then probably some .32 115 grain boolits for .32 H&R and .32-20.

It seems we have two definite classes of outside casters: Those who don't cast in the summer because it is too hot, and those that have to wait until summer when it warms up.

We'll see which group is most prodigous...

June is a shootin' month for me. I rarely cast anymore than I need to get ammo loaded in June. I try to get my casting done by the end of April cause I know there are a lot of things I can do in the summer that I can't do the rest of the year. The second weekend in June I'll be shooting up a lot of the casting sessions proceeds from January.

I live in northeast NY the mornings are pretty cool ,I like to cast a few hundred boolits at a time in the morning before the wife and kids get up thats my weekly routine. I do all my heavy smelting of wheel weights and raw lead in the winter so the summer casting is less smokey . Works for me

Great Idea.
I cast in the garage. In the dead of winter months, I can't cast. The pot fluctuates and I stand on an ice cold concrete slab. A cover for the pot helps, but when it gets below
20 degrees, it is uncomfortable.

Did 40 in a new .360-158-RF mould, just checking how it cast. It fills out good but I have a flash at the base so I stopped. I discovered a gap between the sprue plate and block. I need to get rid of this gap, I'm thinking the plate is tweaked a little but won't know until I take it off and check it on a surface plate.

Alright... against my better judgement, I fired up the pot and poured 400 Lyman 358156. Good consistant pistol and rifle boolit. I'll add that to the 100 or so that I already had on hand and it should last me the rest of the summer. Along with my 800 already cast Ranchdog 175 grainers I think I'm set on .357 for now... :D

I'm still waiting on my new Mihec NATO .225 mold to come in so I can put together some lead fodder for my AR-15...

Each casting session was about 3 hours (the length of an NRA news podcast) and included breaks for drinking, stretching, and such. Undoubtedly more will be cast this month in .22, .40, .41, and .45. it all started as a hobby now its an addiction. Roto Metals is my dealer

last weekend i went out into my garage and started casting by the time i called it quits sorted out the bad from the keepers and put into my bins for the next step (size and lube) i had cast up 1874@ 230gn 45acp bullets current cost per boolet 1.3 cents each less than 8 cents per round down range i just love it. woo hoo i spend less in a clip of rounds than my friends do in two factory rounds.

the weekend before 1243@ 230gn 45acp. like i said i'm addicted nothing like taking raw materials and making something out of it. love to go to the range and shoot my stuff with my son and not have to worry about how many $$$$ i just wasted in factory ammo.

9mm and 40's over the next couple weekends might need to order from Roto again to support my habit.

2 lbs of super hard 15 lbs of pure lead makes a real nice mix add in a little tin and dig into my stash of 1000lbs of free lead i got a year ago and i'm good for many hours and thousands of bootits i alloy up 6 batches or so and mark my ingots so the next time i cast i just melt and cast using my pre alloyed ingots , wish i lived closer to Roto metal and could take my 1000lbs of lead and just have them alloy it all at one time maybe a road trip in the future.

I have not counted them, but I've cast just over 30 pounds of boolits in the last two weeks. Most of what I've cast are 125 grn 9mm, 150 grn .30 cal, 235 grn .375 cal, 350 grn .458 cal, and 49 & 52 grn .22 cal. I am working on getting a .284 cal double cavity mould to drop good boolits (still not happy with those). I'll be casting a bunch of 68 grn .22 cal boolits once my first brass mould arrives.

Had a cool, damp morning here so I finally did some casting. 26.1 lbs of "raw" Lee 452-200-SWC. That is just a bit over 900 that I now need to inspect. If the results of this session are as good as the last it should add 850 to the month.

I did a couple small batches earlier this month so the total of unreported boolits looks lke this;

452-200-SWC 850
358-105- SWC 350
358315 50

New boolits total 1250 to add to the tally.

I just added another 980 of the 452-200-SWC to the tally.

Somehow the peanut butter and the bread came out even. I set the goal of filling a 50 cal. ammo can with these and this last batch accomplished that. 87 lbs. 11 oz. just fit in the can. I had to shake it a little, VERY little at that weight, to get them to settle enough so I could close the lid without forcing it. Going by the design weight there are 3,070 boolits resting comfortably in there. Add 5 lbs for the can and that is one heavy little package.

Now I have to finish filling a 30 cal. can with 421429s then try for 30 cal. cans of Lee 358-105 SWC and 311-93-RN. There will be some serious numbers of those two little guys. I don't mind casting but it's going to seem a lot slower based on how fast the pot will empty.

Put me in for 590 boolits out of an NEI 451-230-RN. I started out with WAY more than that but the mold was not cooperating so I had over 8 lbs of rejects out of a 27 pound batch. ARGH!!!

I recently moved back to Maine, and have just gotten my reloading bench back together. It'd been five years since I last sat down in front of my master caster. Boy, was I glad to see it! I flipped the switch while bolting the presses back down on the bench, and then spent an hour casting 900 .45s in two designs. It was just like I'd never left. Same mold in the machine, pot still full of alloy, so easy to do. I'm downsizing from 16 linear feet of reloading bench in SC, back to eight feet of bench in Maine, so things are a bit crowded. However, having my four feet of dedicated casting bench back with the master caster all set up makes it easily bearable.

I cast 800 Lee C312-185-2Rs about two weeks ago, followed by 350 RCBS 270-150-SP, and tonight I just finished a marathon restocking session with the Lyman 454190 totalling a little over 1100. I finished just before midnight, so I just barely squeaked it in!

So add 2,250 to the score.

Thanks to everybody who indulges me on these threads of whimsy.

As an aside, I converted my brother today after he tried out the .32 115 grain FN (314008) in front of 4.0 grains of Unique in his Ruger .32 H&R. These were the first boolits that went from wheelweight to target for me with lube I made myself. Before, it was either purchased ingots, purchased lube, or someone else's hand in the mix.

The cartridges shot better than either of the two Federal Factory loads we had tried before, but that might be because I tried harder.

Squeked in a few more on Saturday ~500 38 wadcutters and 100+ 45 swc's.

Got 250 rds of 38/357 loaded for plinking on our 4th of July camping trip.

We had 11 100+º days in June, several above 110º. So, total count of bullets cast in June is 0. However I did get several hundred sized, patched, lubed and ready to load if that counts.

Shiloh,

The final count was very arbitrary. Turning "a few more than" or "a little over" into a hard number was a conservative guess, so I am sure my number is a close guess.

I had hoped to get some pointy .357" boolits cast for my sister-in-law for the count, but it just didn't happen. It was sobering to see how fast a month in one's life can slip by.

What a bout the year??? It is July Fourth tomorrow and I am way behind in the things I wanted to do this year. Fortunately, I have put downrange a lot of the boolits cast in June and earlier in the year. I have a Christmas LEE mold that is still in the box for crying out loud!!
