Depending on the 38-55 you can vary the loads to close to factory, whcih kill deer or get them fairly warm. I use a Lee bullet as cast, Starline cases (so I can load as cast) and 3031 powder. Loaded to about 1600 or so it is a fair close range deer load.

I use an RCBS 37-250-fn,Starline brass and H4895 powder.

I use Reloader #7, 32grs and the Lee bullet.

Greetings
I also will recommend the Lyman 375248 cast out of 50-50 (ww- PB) . Push it to 1500 fps with a load similar to 15 gr 3031 and there is no deer out there going to need more than one through the breathers or heart. You can take that load higher but there is not any need to unless you plan on a grill door shot.
I would think the 250 RCBS would do exactly the same.

I have a custom built Model 94 Winchester that thrives on the Lyman 375449, 265 gr. GC, sized .379 and loaded to 1800 FPS @ 12' from muzzle. I get my bullets from Western Bullet Co. right near you in Missoula. He has other bullets and will size and loob to fit your request.

My Savage 1899 rebore to 38-55 loves the 375449 over 26gr Reloader 7, 28-30gr AA2015, or 30-32gr AA2200. I haven't tried 4198 or H322, but both should work.
