I have heard good things about this powder. My question is can you use it with a side hammer muzzleloader, or is it designed for the inlines and 209 primers?

If I remember correctly the ignition temp is a bit higher than even Pyrodex. You might get it to go off in a side lock, by using one of the magnum No 11 caps, but most likely you would have to have a kicker charge of Pyrodex or real black to get an consistent ignition.

Best wishes,

Joe

I have to agree that the Buckhorn is not easy to ignite in a side-hammer. My hunting buddy has tried repeatedly without success. Using a black powder or Pyrodex "kicker" would seem to defeat the purpose of Buckhorn - the easy cleaning after use. If you are going to put BP or Pyrodex in your ML, why not make it a full charge and be done? -Ed

From the product description:

Blackhorn 209 is recommended for high-performance muzzleloaders with 209 primer ignition systems where the primer is TOTALLY enclosed. Not for use with any special muzzleloading primers, #11, musket or high-powered rifle primers. This powder is not suitable for sidelock muzzleloaders.

Thats blackhorn209.

#11 and musket cap will not set it off, Requires a hot 209 primer.

I used a 5 grain pyrodex rs charge to set it off in my sidelock,
