While in Gander mountain yesterday I noticed some good looking high walls on display. 22-250 and 223... $800 . 45-70...$1200! Quite a price jump, is this just because they think it will sell better? Also, a high wall in anything but a rimmed, bp cartridge seems like sacriledge to me. Dale

Yeah, there does seem to have been a jump in prices lately. Just before I bought my (very slightly) used Uberti .38-55 a month or so back, I did a quick check of online prices and noticed that Buffalo Arms was listing the Uberti 1885 Highwall in .38-55 at $824 (plus shipping)...but didn't have one in stock. However, they did have both .45-70 and .30-40 Krag Highwalls on hand...but those were listed for around $940. Somehow, I had the distinct feeling that whenever they received their next .38-55, its list price would jump up right up there to match the others.

Did the 45-70 have a crescent butt plate or was it one of the ugly red rubber jobs?
If it has the crescent butt plate it was one of the comissioned rifles by Davidsons before Winchester shut down they are essentially Brownings.

Uh-uh...at that time, all the Highwalls I was looking at were made by Uberti (Italy). Did, also, look at some Pedersoli's but those were all out of my price range ($1200 and up).

I have seen the same guns at the Gander Mountain stores around here too. My guess is that these calibers were not selling too well, and Gander bought a couple of truckloads cheap.

I lucked out several yeas ago and received a high wall that was in rough shape for Christmas from one of my customers. It had a 30-40 Krag barrel on it and that was soon replaced with a 38-55 taper octagon barrel. The butt stock shows the ware and tare of time and another customer gave me a forearm to match. A new Lymen tang sight got it ready for shooting. The barrel was marked by Dale Woody of Gun fancy and then browned to match the action.

Pedersoli builds Sharps, Rolling Blocks and Trapdoors, but has never marketed a Hiwall.
There has been talk of doing that in the near future, but I guess that project has been shelved due to lack of interest from vendors.
