Shot my new Savage .17 HMR yesterday. What a hoot! Last month a new store opened up in my town and had 10-22s and Savage 17s on sale so I went to get a 10-22. Naturally, the 10-22 were all gone but the .17s were still on hand so I got one ($169.00). Never really wanted one, but what the heck I can afford ammo now so I'll try one. I put a Simmons 22 Mag. scope on it and was only able to shoot for a short time. Got it sighted in pretty good at 25 yds and kept all shots within 2" (I know that ain't so hot and I can keep my Contender 22 lr inside an inch at that range, but new gun, new scope, new caliber, etc.). Someone left a Motorcycle helmet at the range and of course I shot it a couple times at about 50 yards (I wasn't the first to shoot it as it already had some 9mm holes in it.) .17 FMJ zipped right through both sides, itty-bitty hole in one side, itty-bitty hole coming out the other side. I was able to hit some shotgun shells set up at 35 yd. or so, but had to leave. I liked the sound of the .17 HMR too, not a crack like a .22 lr, but a bit more of a bang like a centerfire. I'm looking forward to continued breaking in of the gun and I guess I'll have to stock up on ammo that I find on sale...
