Just finished my first custom rifle. Rem 700 in 22-250, trued the action, sleeved the bolt and but a Shilen select match barrel finished at 26 in. with a 12 twist on it and made the stock from a billet of guitar maple I had with walnut accents. Pillared and bedded of course. Now for the bragging. I found that the barrel was a little finicky with the load development but finally found that 36.0 grains of H414 hit the mark. The weekend was perfect with no wind. Shot off a bench rest stand at 100 yds. Chronyed at 3300 ft/sec. The long range stations were all taken. Pic is of my best group, which is the best I have ever shot by the way. It is a 5 shot group using 55 gr swaged bullets, non weighed, made with Danr dies. I shot 5 groups, and while they were all 1/2" or less this was the best. When I was researching swaging dies I found it hard to find any info on accuracy so I thought I would post that it is indeed possible to get competion accuracy out of these bullets if put some time into it. That said I gave some to a buddy who can't seem to get them to work out of his Browning. I did find that as little as a .5 grain opened the groups with the new barrel but the stock Rem barrel was a lot more forgiving. There you go, for what it's worth. Brian
ps. Here is a pic of one of the eagles that were following us around for the gophers we shot. Never saw anything like it. They didn't mind the shooting at all,

Nice work on the gun, I have been looking to get a Shilen barrel for a 6.5 project test gun with my Savage action. I am still deciding between the Shilen or Pac-Nor.

Yep heck of a goup. I think we can both attest that the potential accuracy from 22LR brass for jackets is every bit as good as commercial bullets. I might have to try some H414 powder. :) I have found the same thing when shooting bullets from brass that they can be picky about what load they like. I noticed this more with my 30 cal testing with the FN 5.7x28 brass for jackets.

A few years back shooting gophers in Eastern Oregon we had a very large golden eagle do the same thing. Matter of fact I was shooting at one sage rat on the run and the eagle beet me to it :)

Good shooting and swage On!

I had a Shilen Select match grade barrel put on my Ruger M77 back in 1992. Old barrel was shot out. My brother had a Ruger M77 also, and we wanted to share brass without having to full-length size every time, so both rifles went to Shilen (I live 20 miles from Shilen's shop). When we had them re-barreled, I asked if they could get them close enough in chamber dimensions so we could share neck-sized-only brass. This is what we got: After rebarreling both rifles, during load re-development, the brass fired in one chamber was interchangable to the other rifle's chamber, the loads performed within 5 fps of each other in the two rifles (average velocity comparison), and the best group I ever shot was a five shot group measuring .557" at 100 yards. This is in .300 Win. Mag., using my swaged 190 gr. 10-S RBBT bullets.
I can say that I'm still just as happy today with the job Shilen did as I was when I measured that group and those velocity readings. He really does great, no, superb work.

I think we are pretty lucky to have so many good barrel makers around today. I can probably come up with nearly a dozen manufactures that have good recomendations. You can look up great groups from many a number of fine barrel makers. Still Shilen does come up a lot.

Good shooting

5-shot group, huh? Where'd the other three go?? ;) THAT, sir, is a group I'd say you need to frame and hang next to the bench. VERY nice work!

PS---Man, you putzes are gonna get me in a whole lotta trouble with the wife if I keep having to look at all the swaging happening and what you're doing with some of it. I can only set aside so much at a time and I've run into some real trouble deciding what I really need the most! Stop teasing already!! ;)
