I just came into a couple pounds of xmp 5744 and am going to use some of it for my 308 win. I would like to know if there is any load data for it with the 44 mag using the 310 gr lee bullet. From what I have read it's a real cast friendly powder.

Check there web sight , you can use 5744 in the 44 mag but theres no advantage over more common powders , 296@ $18
, H110 @$ 18 & 2400@$18 also 5744@$22 costs alot more per pound than the other 3 powders and theses are Midsouths prices a local shop should be much higher !
The only thing i use 5744 is reduced velocity loads in rifle cases , where it excells

I've used quite a bit of it with cast. The Accurate load page shows this;
5744 320 CP WFNGC 16.2 952 18.0 1,082 27,800 1.665

It's wiith a 320 gr lead, they show 18 grs as top load but I know that it is conservative as I've loaded 20 grs with no problems in a Blackhawk and 22 grs in my .45 LC.

bobthenailer is correct about 296 and H110, I'll also throw in AA #9 as a great .44 mag powder. The 5744 will not burn complete in a short barrel but will in a carbine length and was more intended for rifles.

I'd use it strictly as a rifle powder.
Was it gifted to you, a good price purchase, or a full price purchase??

I would use the 5744 specifically in the 308 and 296 or H110 in the 44s.

dont leave in the powder measure, it will eat up the plastic . I will bet that long term storage of loaded ammo will be problem down the road . I like it but dont load anymore than going to use in 6 months . Had a Lyman 55 and left some in the hopper for about 3 months and it was a brick. and plastic was trash

Most powders will do that.

I like 5744, I use it in my .45-70. I once inquired about using it in my .357 but the balistician at Accurate didn't think it was a good fit. The .44 might be a different story, I'd try sending Accurate an e-mail with your questions. I'm sure they'd be able to help you.

My 30/30, 444, and 338 all like 5744 and CB's. Its a powder that gives you a lot of flexibility for a wide range of muzzle velocities without being position sensitive.

From what I've read, I gather that 5744 is a pretty fast burning powder and uses less case capacity to accomplish what it does.

5744 is similar in burning rate to 4759. Its a double base powder with elevated nitroglycerin content, so may explain why(1) it is hard on plastic and (2) relatively position insensitive. I like it as a cast boolit powder in 35 Remington, 30-30, 7.5x55, 8x57mm, 45-70. In many cartridges it leaves unburned powder behind, but doesn't seem to hurt accuracy. I can't explain why, but it burns completely in my .308, and it isn't because of higher pressures.

5744 is a very bulky powder, designed for reduced loads in large cartridges, kind of like Trail Boss. 5744 is more powerful though, and does a very good job of filling the case.
In the 45-70 you can load anywhere between 25-40 grains, Trapdoor to Ruger. Very versatile stuff.

I've found the same thing with 5744, some unburnt powder in the 45-70 & very clean in the 30-40 Krag. Maybe the case design ? :veryconfu

5744 is ideal for driving cast bullets from large capacity cases. Is not very sensitive to location in the case. I use it with .375 H&H, .416 Aagard, .416 Rigby, .458 AccRel and .470 Nitro Express.

i just tried 5744 in my 460. It will almost run as fast as 296, but it will go almost as slow as trail boss. I still have to chrono some loads, but this seems like a perfect mid range powder for me. I made some stout loads that are comfortable to shoot.
