Going to start casting for 40 S&W and was wondering what mold is popular. Thinking somewhere around 155 grainer.

Thanks in advance.

I use 180gr with good success.

I actually have pretty good success with Lee's TL 175gr. TC

Do you size them or just tumble lube and load them up? That's probably what I'll go with.

Thanks

they drop at .402" from my mold,
So no sizing...I just Tumble lube them with 45-45-10 and load them.
if the mold you get drops them much larger, you'll probably need to size them,

another fan of the lee 175. Its a good bullet. I do size mine to 401 in a lube sizer. I dont like tumble lube. It gums up semi auto guns and ive had problems with squibs from ammo thats stored long term where it can get warm. It will get you by if your loading up a few hundred rounds to shoot that day but you surely will need to clean that gun afterward.

Lee's TL 175gr. TC is working very well for me. I'm dropping about 750 bullets an hour out of the 6 cavity without being in a hurry and they work fine for practice and matches.

I'm another who doesn't tumble-lube.......it wasn't invented when I started casting (1981) and I've been a Lyman 450 user since Day One. The Lee 175 grain truncated cone design with conventional lube groove has been an EXCELLENT, ACCURATE boolit in three 40 S&W pistols for me. It is a close match to my carry load's bullet weight (W-W Ranger SXT 180 grain), so it is easy to derive a practice load from the Lee castings. I use 4.7 grains of WW-231 in W-W casings and WSP primers, OAL 1.135". Slight taper crimp is applied after seating. Boolits are sized @ .401".

I have used mostly the Lee 145 gr SWC mold, but since getting one of Eric's 2 cavity HP conversions of the Lee 175 gr TC, it has become my new favorite. Sized .401 and lubed with BAC.

You ever tested those hp's to see how they expand?

No, not really. I've recovered a few that expanded nicely, but was shot in dirt. Maybe one of these days I'll do a serious test through some water jugs or phone books, but it's not real high on my priority list.

Ditto that. I've cast thousands of these and have had great success.

I have two of Lyman's #401638 four cavity moulds 40-175-TCBB and two four cavity Lyman 9mm moulds a buddy recut to produce a 40-145-TCPB. The 145 grainer is a really nice plinking boolit in my 40 Tanfoglio. The 175 works fine too and is very accurate.

I really like Lyman's 150'ish swc 2 cavity mould .

that is hands down the best shootin 10mm 40sw bullet ive ever shot. In my 610 and 646 smiths it hands down outshot everything. I made my buddy a convert too as he has the same two guns and his liked them just as much. I havent fooled with them much in black guns though. I just wish lyman would make the design in a 4 cav block!!
