I'm interested in a 30-30 mold with a fairly large meplat that is still accurate out to the 150 yard range. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Branden

Most people seem to prefer the 170 grain molds from Lyman or Lee for moderate range hunting with a .30-30. Some go for the more expensive name brands.

Personally, I have had such good luck with the 150 grain flat point from Lee, that I have never tried anything else in that caliber. I get better accuracy than factory ammo at virtually the same velocity out of a Marlin lever gun using a 13bnh boolit pushed by Reloader 7. If I bump the hardness up to 24bnh, accuracy gets a little better, but terminal performance is not as good. 13bnh gives me a moderate amount of mushroom at 1800-2200fps. 24bnh gives me almost no boolit deformation at all.

rcbs 150-fngc is your other choice.
i use it or step up to the 311041.
the 150 is my bbolit of choice in the 30-30 and some of my other 30 cal rifles though.

My favorite is Lyman 322191, but it is a blunt round nose and you wanted a big meplat.

Lyman 311041 is a favorite as it RCBS 180 GCFN. The RCBS bullet casts at about 190 grains, functions well though the 30-30 and has a good reputation as a deer bullet.

I have not bought a new off the shelf bullet mold in about 4 years, but at that time RCBS quality was better than Lyman quality. I don't know if that has changed or not.

My only mold purchased specifically for the .30-30.
So by default, this is my favorite. I am very pleased with the performance.

I vote with those who vote RCBS 30-180 FN. I have loaded many hundreds, if not thousands for use on the rams in Lever Action Silhouette and find them the most reliable and accurate boolits for that use in the 30-30. I load 29.5 grains of WW-748 and would unhesitantly take that load deer hunting.

If you are shooting a Marlin, I am with selmerfan in recommending you look at the Ranchdog 311-165. You should get the .310 sizer he sells with it if you are shooting Microgroove barrel. I got mine with the 3/3 gc and pb option. I shoot the gc with 3031 and the PB with SR 4759. Great Molds for Marlin lever guns. Please note that I am NOT affiliated with RD Outdoors, but, I am a very satisfied customer using RD's in 6 different caliber Marlins. RC

+1

And the Lee 309-170-FP is very similar.

I was going to suggest the 170 Lee, I do not have a 30-30 but I do use this boolit in a pair of 30-06's and a pair of 300 AAC Blaclouts. Shoots very well.

There are gb going for NOE 311440 and 311041. I am looking forward to seeing how the 311440 works in my 30-30.
