Wondering if I need gas checks with cast bullets on my marlin 30/30 or my 1958 30/30 win. Want to experiment with 115/150 and 170 gr cast boolits over some pistol powder like w231/trailboss/unique etc...

Anyone here tried Penn bullets 150gr fp ? They are not gc but they claim with withstand 2000fps...

I use Lyman 311241, plain base, with 6 grains of Unique and it is nicely accurate. As long as the velocity is kept down below 1400 fps, you should not have any problems. A word of warning: These are so much fun to shoot you'd better make up a lot before going to the range!:-)

that's called advertising.
they probalbly tell you they are somewhere between 18 and 100 bhn in the next sentence.
if you want to shoot them as a 30-30 instead of a 32 acp you'll need gas checks.
if you just wanna pook them out at about 1k fps then a plain base will work.
for the winchester the rcbs 150fngc mold with a 300 nose and 310 body will work as intended.
i would recommend you look at a ranch dog mold [the rd 165] for the marlin.

You will not get 2000 fps with any PB bullet.

I shoot my 30 calibers at approx 1470 w/o any trouble.

14.0 gr of 4227 is a good PB 30/30 load. It give approx 1400 fps with a 187 gr bullet depending on barrel length.

Oh he can get 2000 fps with that PB'd bullet easily in the 30-30......it's the hittin' anything with it that will be the hard part:groner:

As all have mentioned, GCs are needed for what you want. Frank is absolutely correct that PB'd cast bullets can be very accurate below 1500 fps.

I shoot LEE 170gr GC booits cast from WW's with 24grs AA 5744. I get 2000 fps with these loads from my Win '94 Centenial with 26" barrel and they group nicely @ 100yds.

You'll shoot plain base until you scrub your bore ...and then shoot nothing but gas checks after that.
I've shot many IHMSA matches and a kazillion hunting rounds in gas checked 30-30 , .308, 45-70 and 7-TCU, and never has one trace of leading and always came away with easily cleaned, pristine barrels.
Gas checks...for me, the only way to go.

I shoot the lee 170 gc straight ww, water dropped sized .311 in a .3095 marlin over 30 of IMR 3031. Kills pigs dead. (work up, its safe in my gun... your mileage may vary) shoots 2 1/2 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards all day with no lead. I do not know the fps, but guessing about 2000.

I did a LOT of work last summer with un-checked and plain-based boolits in my Marlin .30-30. What I found is that anything over 1200 fps leaded the throat something fierce, and that killed accuracy in a few shots. My solution was to make paper gas checks punched out of manilla folder material, form them with a .30 cal top punch and .311" sizing die with the gas check seater installed on the Lyman 450, then glue them on the boolit bases with Elmer's spray adhesive and size/lube like normal. This eliminated leading entirely up to nearly 1800 FPS with the Lee 170 RF boolit, but accuracy went away somewhere between 1500-1600. I decided that since my wage is more than a box of Hornady checks per hour, and I spent a lot of time making the paper checks, I wasn't saving any money using them for plinkers. Any kind of check, including the plain-based beer-can checks from several of the check tool makers, makes a world of difference whether you popcorn loads or full-house hunting loads.
