Widest meplate for auto-loaders? (40cal / 10mm)

Hi folks,
What's the widest meplate one would expect to feed reliably in an auto-loader like a Glock? I'm considering my options for custom molds but they aren't cheap so I don't want to screw it up.

i don't have a 40.
i do however shoot a couple of 9mm's and some 45's
in the 9's i use 125 gr rnfp's designed for my 38
and in the 45's i use 160,225&250 rnfp's meant for the 45 colt
if i had a 40 i would try the 180gr rnfp i have for the 38-40.
it's all in the nose angle/feed ramp relationship.
and how the magazine presents the round.

depends to much on the specific gun to say what will run or what wont. even two identical guns will have different limits to what they will run. Like runfiverun said though, usually a round flat works much better then a lfn or wfn.

I'm looking at the .40cal 200gn WFN mold group buy that's in the works. Looks like a tangential ogive type nose with an 80% meplate. Speer Gold Dots are the widest hollow points I've seen at 70% and I can't help but think that's for a reason.

Realistically, I'd say just under .401---can't get much wider than that. ;) Joking aside, there are more than a few here who have had great success running full wadcutters through 9mm all the way up through .45ACP. There's no reason you couldn't do the same for .40S&W. Load data might be a little tricky at the start, but not impossible.

I run TC and SWC (Lee TC) in my 40 (XD not G) with no problems. It's a feedramp/throat problem. You stated 40 & 10, 200 gr. so the 40 gets seated 10% deeper than 180. I accidentally( .404 - hard cast base first sized) mushed the nose when resizing, to ~ 80% and they won't fit.

The feed ramp / throat problem is exactly what I'm concerned about. (Load data I can figure out.)

Last year I made a few mold designs for a friend who wanted to press the maximum meplat for the Glock model 22. We finally arrived at #40-195P in my catalog, with a meplat of .300". It functions flawlessly in his Glock 40 S&W.

Interestingly, the limiting factor was not the feed ramp, but the magazine. The mag is curved enough in the front that it clumps the rounds together and jambs them up if a wider meplat is used. The obvious solution would be a shorter nose for a wider meplat, but he did not want to reduce his case capacity.

This bullet has also been tested in the Glock 20 10mm and feeds well there, also.

The WFN in the group buy has a meplate of .323 iirc. That would be a tad wider then the .300 you recommend. Doesn't sound good to me.

#40-195P is functioning in the Glock when loaded with only about .27" of nose outside of the case. This drawing does not show the actual nose length, but it looks very close to that. It could be dicey. For a 1911 or H&K, it would be a different story.

I have a Colt 1911A1 and a Sig P220 and both feed full wadcuters fine.

All three of my Tanfoglio 10mms function just fine with full diameter meplats. Like a soupcan. I don't cast these but swage them with half jackets.
