View Full Version : The buy for the .45 collar button starts here.

Catshooter

This is a group buy for the .45 collar button that .45 2.1 has designed for us. The lube groove is huge, so this boolit should work for small to tall. Target diameter is .461, with a weight of about 156 grains and it should size down to .451 without losing the groove. It'll also hold plenty of lube for the Holy Black, should you be so inclined. 45 2.1 will post a picture shortly for y'all do drool on.

Cost is $60 for a six gang Lee custom mould. This includes $2 for this wonderful board. I ship USPS Priority, but with no insurence. Out of country? PM me for how to pay.

Now I am running more than one buy, so it's very important you tell me what buy you want in on and and your screen name. Some of us write, well, lets just say I can't read what some write, so I must have your screen name.

PM me for my address. I take checks or money orders. I'll hold the buy open for a month, (unless we need more time) then issue last call, then close it. After I mail the moulds, I'll wait a month and then offer up any extras for sale, if any. I can't control the USPS, so if it doesn't arrive there's not alot I can do. Their insurence system just isn't worth messing with, but if someone wants it, let me know and I'll let you know how much.

Should be fun, and a hell of a mould.

Is this a copy of the LYMAN 457130 mold?

I have one unused in the black and grey banded cardboard box. Does anyone know what size it would drop from these molds?

One coming out at .461" may be the way to go.

Can be used from as cast at 0.461" done to about 0.446" or lower if you use a push thru die. Any rifle caliber covering those dimensions. Any pistol caliber covering those dimensions. It feeds in the 45 ACP from the magazine and will shoot to your hunting load sights in a shorter barreled 4570. Not too bad a deal for such a little boolit.

Check went in the mail Friday. I'm really looking forward to this one. It looks like an ideal short range plinker for the .45 revolvers and might work unsized in the .45-70 lever action. Although I have the round nose .45 GB mold coming (I hope it gets here soon), if this works in the .45 ACP, it will save some of my valuable stash of WW.

A member PMed me and asked if I knew the top punch needed for this boolit. Of course I don't:wink: .

Does anybody know? Lyman (or Ideal) must have one for it.

I know that as a last resort you can take a TP that's too big and fill the nose with epoxy and cast your own.

Catshooter:

Lyman's 2nd Edition "Cast Bullet Handbook" (also on CASTPICS) lists Top Punch #130 for the .45 Collar Button. It's an odd nose shape, and I don't see any others like it. But the current #374 for the various round-nose .45's might work OK.

Well as you can see from the image I attached to my last post, the #457130 uses the 130 Top Punch and seating stem. [smilie=s:

The mould number is a clue:
457 indicates the diameter Lyman/Ideal planned on the bullet being AFTER sizing.130 means this was the very first bullet with that nose contour.
In this case I believe it was the only bullet to have this particular nose.

Based on images of other moulds from that same time period, you might get away wih using a #374, or a #191 or a #251 top punch.
I say might because there's really nothing else with that nose.

I plan on sizing mine with a Lee push through and then tumbling lubing.

I think Lee (or [smilie=1: some other enterprising soul) is missing the boat by not offering (at an additional cost of course) custom top punches and seating stems with their custom moulds. Since Lee already has all of the specifications it would be a simple matter to lathe cut one on a blank.
I know I'd glady pay a little more for them.

NEI makes almost the same boolit as their #332C.

And the good news is thay also make a matching top punch!
$12 for the Lyman/RCBS version and $18 for the Star/SAECO version.

So I think I'm going to have to have one of these too.

Size nose first with a flat base punch then lube in another step. The little flat spot on the nose won't hurt anything.

If last call is in mid May, Ill be in on this.

He reports good success with Unique at 9.0 grains giving 1200 fps and another of his "pet" loads is 16 grains of IMR 4227 for 1200 fps which appears to be the "sweet spot" velocity with this bullet design. Is this a copy of the LYMAN 457130 mold?

I have one unused in the black and grey banded cardboard box. Does anyone know what size it would drop from these molds?

One coming out at .461" may be the way to go.

John.

I'll take it if you still got it and want to part with it.
