I have 1912 Winchester model 94 in 30-30.ihave owned it since I was16 and now I would like tocast boolitsfor it. I have been looking at Lyman 160, 170 & 173gr moulds with gas checks. I know that guns are different, but what would be the best all around boolit to start with?

Thank you

I have a 1902 model, 1905 and a 1918 version of the same rifle. Mine loves the Lyman 311041 sized to .311 over a midrange load of IMR3031.

+1 on 311041, it's the classic 30-30 bullet. I also size mine at .311, lube with Javelina, GC and load over 28 gr 4895 for practice and general shooting. As mentioned 3031 is also a good powder but doesn't "throw" very well for me as it's kernels are longer. I cast the 311041s of WWs + 2% tin + 50% lead for hunting and now load them over 35 gr LeveRevolution powder.

For a low end plinker and small game bullet the Lee TL314-90-SWC lightly lubed with LLA and then sized .311 over 2.7 gr Bullseye is a great load.

Can we get a little more info? What do you want to do with cast bullets? Hunt, plink, some type of competition? Do you have a lubri-sizer or will you need to tumble lube or pan lube? I have 311041, 308291 HP, but I also have 2 RCBS 150 gr moulds, a plain base and a gas check version. I really like the RCBS 30-150-CM plain base with 14 gr or either flavor of 4227 to shoot steel plates and small buffalo silhouettes out to 200 yards.

I have a 1908 94 SRC 30-30. I use lyman 311041 sized .311 GC. I use 30 grs of 4350. At 100yds my worst spread was 2-7/8" the rest of the holes were 1/2" and touching. I couldn't believe this LiL gun doing this. Its a carbine! Chrono'd 1700 FPS. And very mild punches with 4350 powder.
Enjoy that rifle its a blast to shoot!
PS just got a new magazine spring from wolf and now it cycles perfect also.

Wouldn't hurt to slug it but if you'll size @ .311 as Larry suggested that should cover it. Switching to lead now is the responsible thing to do, keep that old treasure around for a few more generations. Enjoy.
