Awhile back I loaded some .45 LC's for a friend who had never shot one before. He has one of those Century single shot .410 / .45LC with a 10 inch barrel. Anyhow, he had the chance to use it awhile back and hit a nice 4X4 mule deer broadside at about 50 yards. He said it didn't even move or run, just fell over dead. His first time shooting a larger caliber and first shot ever. He is now a .45 LC fan and just bought some more brass for me to reload. The old RCBS 255 strikes again

Excellent! One of my all time favorite calibers.

Cool! I love the .45 Colt as well.

I was looking at one of those single shots the other day, they are crude and cheap if it's the same one, but if it shot accurately seems like it would be a useful gun. What are your friend's thoughts on his?

Whitworth - I don't think he took pics of the deer but he did have the rack.

richhodg66 - I also think they are a little crude looking but it seems to work pretty well. I'm hoping to get my hands on it for some range testing. Also wondering about the long chamber jump to the rifling in the .410 chamber and if it'll lead up

That combined with it being a single shot would allow for plenty of room for beullet seating experimentation. If you get a chance to try it out, please post some reports. There is one sitting in a shop downtown I'm pretty sure I could have cheap, I just don't want to get it if I don't know anymore about them.

My neighbor has two that he carries all the time. he is using 454 casull cases with 45 colt (ruger level) loads. For me off the bench it held about 3 inches at 25 yards. Good enuff.

Congrats to him and you for the loading.

I thought it was Century but I was wrong, it was a Super Comanche like this one.

I have 1 of those. The Colts don't shoot so well for me . If they are slowed down to about 800-850 w/a pretty soft boolit its best. I did try some brass 410s (303B blown straight) w/10gr of Unique and a 45cal maxi-ball to good effect on paper ,about 4" at 50yd.

My bbl as I recall ,not having my book handi, was actually 44 cal,and tiny little grooves w/huge lands.

I think I'm going to go make sure my rugers and my contender are FAR apart. Cause after seeing that I sure as hell dont want them having offspring in my safe.

Quantifier!

I only used the long case to get the boolit out closer to the lands in an attempt to eliminate most of the jump not to hotrod the gun and to make it something its not. This load has a huge case void even w/that much maxi buried in it.

How did you form the .303 case to be straight sided? Intersting solution to the freebore jump.

Did you say yours had a .44 bore? Could it possibly chamber a .444 Marlin Case?

The freebore jump is something I'm not sure of either. I need to get it from him and work up a good load. I know the ones I loaded for him work great in my Blackhawk but need to be tweeked for his. Since it's a single shot I see no real need for crimping so I may just seat the boolits out further and try that. I like the idea of the .454 cases too.

Harter66, how'd you blow out those .303 cases? I know the base diameter in front of the rim is smaller than a .45 but it's a cool idea. Anyone make brass .410 cases?

I have several pins for my RCBS universal decapping die. I baically step it up to 32 then 35,40,45. And anneal in between 35 and 40 . Then in the past I used 12gr of Unique w/some styrofoam meat tray wads and a 440 RB I think its a little hot though. I've found that the most important part is to have the "neck" supporting the Coke bottle shaped case close to centered in the chamber to prevent splitting. On that note it is possible to rework the split cases into other 45s like Colts shotshells,454s,Colts,Schofields,and the rimmed WM,ACPs,etc if you want to be go that far.

There are 410 cases available . I think they're about $2.50 ea. MagTech maybe.

I see that a few dealers have them Cabela's has them for about $30 / 25. What dies would work for sizing and loading such long cases for .45 slugs?
This does have my interest for his gun and maybe for the Taurus Judge also.

I use my Colts dies from RCBS and touch up the top half of the case w/44 mag dies. I read an artical some place else ,it stated that the 444 cases could be used also. I had a few pick up 303s and bought a few pre owned too . A survival forum I think . I googled for brass 410s and came up w/it. $30 for 25 isn't bad ,they were a lot more when I was looking.

There are some good threads in here under 450 or 45 Mongo which is basically what I have.

Just remember you can't use the whole case, bad things will happen . This is best thought of as a 45-60 for a Trapdoor.
