Here's my new .45-70. Please ignore the funny looking boolits.

Well Swampman, I hope you enjoy your #1 - 45/70 as much as I do mine!

I still think I'd get rid of that ugly Alexander Henry groove on the forend and replace it with a nice piece of ebony.

Mine is blued/walnut, but it is a joy to have in the woods,

Keep em coming!

PS, are those funny look'in things boolits??? Look more like bullets but the Ol'Coot could be mistaken.

It will be shooting cast boolits. I can't afford the other kind anyway.

Back at ya again Swampman ---------

I pick up my rifle at a hock shop, and it looked almost like new.

Possibly ??? the reason it was there, again ???? was the chamber is really short.

So short infact that one of the pieces of "pick up" 45/70 ammo which I had around wouldn't even chamber the "J" bullet in that factory load. Forget if it was Rem or Win.

I also had problems chambering loads with a LBT WFN 355gr boolit, and had my G.S. open the throat up a tiny bit.

No such problems with my new mold which came from Bruce and is one of his WFN 465gr styles.

I am finding that the heavier boolit shoots much better then the 355gr slug.

Moving towards testing some lubes now, and then maybe some more powders to see if anything out shoots Bruce's recommendation of H335.

Later,

Love it!!
Odd how a #1 can look classy, even when stainless/laminate.
I don't have a Stainless/Laminate #1. HMMMM.......might need to work on that.........

That is one purty rifle there. I don't know if you have any other #1's, but I am going to warn you.
They are almost as addictive as shooting cast boolits, or paper patching.
Those boolits do look funny. What kind of patch is that? LoL great old boxes of ammo though.

I have the mold for the boolit in Swampman's photo, made by Magna but with three grooves to take more soft lube for BP. I had it adapted to Lyman handles and it throws WW right at 420 grains. My twin to the stainless/laminate above loves this boolit over 23 grains of 2300 with a puff of pillow dacron. It shoots a cloverleaf at 50 yards if I do my part. I may play with 25-26 grains just see how it shoots with a bit more umph. This boolit also shoots very well out of my new Guide gun with Skinner sights.

Best of luck with your new toy and I hope you find something besides paper to shoot it at soon. GF

Good look'in gun Haggway!

Have always liked #3s that were wearing #1 wood.

Only thing that might be better is one with a shorter an slimmer forend and a barrel band for the sling swivel.

I started out with the #1 "B"s and still really like them, but the Alexander Henry forend, MINUS the ugly groove and with a replacement tip of walnut or ebony is just soooooooooooo nice!

Anyway, cool #3!

Another great fan of the #1 in 45-70 here. Mine is a stock 1-S variant in blue/walnut, with about 3500 rounds down the barrel. Still shoots wonderfully, and it hasn't seen a j-word in at least 10 years.

What the heck is a J-word?

Just as English stage actors did not like to say Macbeth, instead referring to it as 'The Scotish Play, we refer to lead bullets with some sort of ugly outer garment by the less offensive and simpler term,"J" bullet. I have not loaded one the unmentionable things in years although I have thousands of them , locked away of course.

Well, guess the "J" thingys have their place, just not in my 45/70!
