Im looking for a 22 rifle. Stopped by the store and seen they had a Marlin semi auto. Who makes the better rifle?

Ruger and Marlin make Good products. My experience with Marlin/Glenfield Model 60s has been more satisfactory than 10/22s as far as accuracy/reliability and less fussy regarding ammo.BUT.....if you want to build a super dooper atomizer, then Rugers are the way to go,tons of goodies available.Just my two cents worth...Mike

I have both and hardy is right on. My Marlin is bone stock and shoots great. The Ruger also shoots great but it took a new barrel and trigger to do it. Mike

Another consideration. I recently picked up a Marlin Model 60 NRA 125th Anniv. edition with a 4x scope for 125 bucks. I saw a Model 60 at a gun show yesterday that was minty. The asking price was 110. I've never seen a Model 60 that didn't shoot well for a light sporter.

The marlin model 60 is a very accurate rifle.
The Ruger 10-22 can be made to shoot as accurately for a whole lot more money after the already high asking price.

Your gonna spend money on the Ruger to make it shoot like the 60 or any other Marlin semi auto model does out of the box and that is fact I have had 5 10/22s in my life time 4 were stock ones and they shot ok but none of them shoot as well as Marlin 22's do. I had a 60 and have shot other 60 variants and they all shoot excellent. My two Marlin bolt guns both older Marlin 80's will shoot rings around any Ruger 10/22 which is why I own them and do not own a Ruger anymore. If I did want an other 22 Semi auto it would be a Marlin.

iv'e had marlins for many years and they allways shot better than me. one day i decided to try a ruger 10-22 semi auto since i own so many of there revolvers and a big fan of them. i bought a new 10-22 with syn. stock, shot 2 clips through it, brought it to a gun show and traded it straight up for an old marlin 60. i now have 3 .22 marlins.

Let us know how that works out for ya :drinks:

I'd tend to agree with the guys about the Rugers , after you spend more cash on them they can do right well on the target . With mine a trigger was the place to start , since I have the older "sporter" style stock I didn't have to toss the carbine type stock to relieve barrel pressure points . With a good scope and selected ammo mine does almost as well as my neices rifle . I still think mine looks better though

My bias runs to the 10/22.
There are more aftermarket products for 10/22 than probably any other .22 RF rifle.
One can dress them and trick them out to as wild as you want to go.

Probably the best improvement one can make is a trigger job. it can be done with aftermarket parts like Volquartsen, Power Custom, Rimfire Technologies, ect.
Can also be done by tweaking factory parts.

The S&W MP 15/22 has the accuracy built in. They are showing up at a lot of Appleseed
Marksmanship Shoots.

Just bought a Ruger 10/22 Takedown model. For some unknown reason they shoot better out of the box than the other standard models. Mine does 3/4" groups at fifty yards all day long with cheap ammo. Only mods I made were trigger job, Firesight set, and auto bolt release mod. Go to Rimfire Central and read about them. Can't tell you how happy I am with this gun.

That is why I now own Two Marlin Bolt action 22's and do not own any Rugers any more.

Yep !! Now that sounds like a good move as long as ya got the cash to back it up .

My 10/22 dates to the seventies and it needed money help to shoot well . My newest Marlin bolt rifle dates to the early nineties and it needed fussing ( but no money ) with to get really good accuracy . My neice though , bought a model sixty that will drive nails , now if I can just get her to practice with it .

I can't recall haveing problems with either brand's bolts or semis and there have been and are several of each in the family. In the early 90s I had a 10/22, now sister has it, that I would only shoot at 100 yds when at the range, anything closer just wasn't a challenge. I have Rugers, Savages, Remingtons, Henrys and Marlins. I guess I have alot of 22s. I like both the Marlins and the Rugers.

Both are good guns and the Marlin has the edge in accuracy out-of-the-box. If you're into "tacti-cool" or hot-rodding yer guns, go with the Ruger; a whole lot of aftermarket stuff available. If you just want to shoot small groups or hit raggits at 50 yards, get a Marlin...

Marlin, especially if you can find an older one at a good price. Had mine 20+ years and still puts CCI Mini-Mag HP's in a dime size group at 50 yards if I do my part. ;) It's had thousands and thousands put through her too. ;)

If I was buying a new one and had to have a semi automatic the Marlin is the way to go for accuracy. If you like to tinker around and spend money buy a 10-22 reciever and build your own because if you buy a new one the reciever will be the only thing left original on it. The stock has to go. The barrel will be replaced. New aftermarket trigger. If I didn't have to have an semi auto I think I'd like to try one of those AR 15 conversions to 22.

Good morning
Or you could get a Browning lever action 22 and really have a super shooter. Bought mine used for $220 some years ago.

My Marlin 60 shoots great, just needed an inexpensive 1 piece scope mount to lock onto the receiver.
