One problem I have always had with the primer is that my hand would rub the lid causing it to unlock, pop off, and spill primers in my lap. Just drop a large kitchen match in the slot in the front of the lid. This keeps it from unlocking:

While I don't think I could bring myself to put a "strike anywhere" match in that slot, I can easily picture a roofing nail or some such to do the same job. Great idea, I'll try it.

Good point! I just cut off the head and redid the link.

Great thinking.
I got rid of mine and bought the RCBS version for that reason. Only it is worse than the Lee in that regard and has the additional problem of jamming primers.

Back to the Lee for me.

That nail would make fine shrapnel. I'd rather use the match stick. Cut the head off it if you want.

The problem I have with the Lee's is the tray cover warps where it is cut out for the body. This allows the primers to flip as they feed to the ram. I solved that with a paper clamp:

Stops the lid from opening too...

The new Lee Auto Prime has a latch on it. Works Great!

Hey Jon K,

I know this may be redundant, but please humor an easily confused old man. You're saying the latest versions of the Lee Auto Prime now have that latch like the Lee Safety Prime does?

Regards,

Dave

I converted my old turret press to a 4 holer some time back. Recently, I added the VERY useful "Safety Prime" and really appreciate the new latch. It IS my understanding that the new Lee Auto Prime has a similar safety latch. If so, and I believe it is, it is a giant step forward.

Preiously, I just used a strip of Scotch Tape to secure the lid. Works very well (I have a roll of Scotch tape in my shooting kit just for that purpose). When and if my auto prime goes belly-up, I'll be getting the new one.

I just had a thought - maybe Lee sells just the trays and lids. If so, a person could simply convert his Auto Prime to the update. Maybe I'll drop Lee a note on this (be nice if it could be bought as an "Update Kit"...

I have been using a couple of wooden clothes pins to keep the lid on my Lee Auto-Prime.

On my Lee primer trays I use an elastic band I cut from an appropiately sized bicycle tire tube. But I like and will try the wooden match trick. cutting off the head of course.
