MiHec 30 Sil brass four cavity solid
This is a sign-up thread for an old GB & BRP mold design........ specifically a heavier cast boolit for the 30 caliber rifles. It also fits and shoots well in the semi-autos. This boolit is a gas check design. It casts out slightly above 0.312" and sizes easily to 0.309". Ready to load weight is about 180 gr. dependent on your alloy. It has fit in everything we've tried it in. To date the best load has gotten sub 1 MOA at 378 yds out of a semi-auto 7.62 AR in the lower 2100 fps to 2400 fps range. Price is $95 + $15 shipping...price to be verified with MiHec

Please give your disguised e-mail address (you won't be on the list for an invoice unless you do so) and the number of molds you want.

The discussion thread is here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=137438 (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=137438)

A hollow point version is here:
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=154615
This will be cut at the time the four cavity solid is.

Good things come to those that wait. Several folks here have seen the 8mm Sil shot at targets and long range. Its a excellent performer (MOA over the military barleycorns at 100 yds by several people in different 24/47 rifles). In a scoped military (left handed stock that only lefties can shoot) it does quite well. It won't be going active for a while yet........... maybe you'll participate then.

Sometimes it takes quite a while to find out things. A hollow point version of this design is going on here:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=154615

It is a three cavity brass hollow point built on a slightly larger than two cavity blocks.

This and the hollow point will be cut concurrently since they are useing the same cherry.

How would this boolit perform for hunting application?

As with any pointed type boolit, it would depend entirely on what alloy, heat treatment and velocity you shot it at. With the typical harder alloys on this forum, I wouldn't recommend those........... but with my methods, i've had them expand at two hundred yards. There is another thread showing this mold available as a hollow point. That would greatly help expansion.

Yep, I've got it bad also, I've started out buying surplus ammo, then a gun top shoot it, then dies, then a mold before but didn't know I had it bad
until I bought dies first then a gun then ammo then a mold. You'll be the first I know to buy a mold first.

After carefully backtracking this thread it seems the mystical cutter is no closer than it was 2-1/2 months ago.
I have several of Mihec's molds, and they are of good quality. The craftsmanship is excellent and they cast very nice boolits.
However, his customer service and information handling seems severely crippled.
According to his profile, he is logging in regularly, seems he could at least drop by the threads that are feeding his business and let us know what is going on.
Please remove my request for this particular mold. Maybe I will have time to wait for the next one.
I have purchased a very similar mold from NOE and it will be here in less than a week, in time to get some loads ready and tested before the next hunting trip at the end of the month.

172.5
173.3
172.3
172.7
171.9

I was fighting w/ two sticking cavities all morning. Mold was heat cycled four times before casting. I couldn't get the middle cavities to drop easily irregardless of mold/alloy temp. I've had this happen before w/ new molds so I know it will improve over time.

One thing to watch with these deep lube-groove designs is voids in the bottom of the groove, such as the middle one above. I have several moulds like this and without ladling per the designer's instructions they're a pain sometimes.

Huh? There is no voids in any of them. Those three are all at 173 grains. I did find that to get proper fill out I had to make sure the pour was centered in the sprue hole. If it was off the base would not always fill out properly.

I am coming up with 2.528" and it is in the rifling hard, but extracts fine. The bottom of the lube grove is right at the base of the neck of the case. Am I going to blow the lube off before it even in in the barrel?

In most all the 308 / 7.62 Nato barrels i've shot it in, the gas check is at the base of the neck. That list would include: Ruger scout & M77, Browning BLR & A bolt, 1912 Mauser 308 rebore, rebarreled 1911 SR, Cetme, H&K, FN, M1A, Valmet, Ar-10, Enfield 308, Russian 308 bolt, M70 match custom position rifle etc. All of these seem to have either 7.62 Nato or 308 SAAMI chambers. I suspect you got a tight throated match rifle barrel. Another forum member here has a brand new Palma barrel with tighter throating than yours. He ran a 30-06 throating reamer into his for a perfect fit. I don't think you'll have a lube problem, just shoot it and see what happens.

tomme boy
01-22-2013, 08:20 PM
If it does not work for this, it might work for one of my Mosins. It is casting right at 0.313" The gas check base is 0.2876" which is good for my aluminum checks and for the ones that Blammer sells. Hornady's might be a problem. They are averaging 174.2 - 174.5gr.

dragon813gt
01-22-2013, 08:27 PM
I'm wondering how your gas check shanks are .279 and mine are .289? That's quite a difference. I'm good with .011" aluminum for gas check material. I was hoping to use .014" since I already have it.

Hornady checks are VERY tight and push up a big ring of lead if you don't seat them firmly before sizing. This is with 50/50 alloy.

Had to go to the post office today to pick mine up. Somehow they thought it required a signature. When I found the card in my mailbox, I thought I was being summoned for jury duty. I handed the card to the clerk and he came back with the familiar box from Miha.

I have gotten about 10 molds from Miha so far, and all have required my signature. I'm not up for jury duty for another year. I always seemed to get picked to be on a jury. Last guy I helped put away sent me a letter from prison about jury tampering. The DA told me to ignore it. It is scary when the prisoner has your name and address.

Tomme,

tomme boy
01-25-2013, 08:32 PM
Savage 10 series in 308 win. It has a new Shilen 26" 1-10tw 308 win. Stainless steel Select Match. It has a Match chamber and throat. That was why the seating of the boolit is so short. There is a total of 92 rounds down the tube.

I have a Simmons 6-20x AO scope on a 20 MOA base. It still has the accu-trigger set at 2 lbs. Kevin Rayhill Tactical bolt handle.

A good barrel and trigger will make even a novice look like a pro sometimes.

I don't have an instrument big enough to measure my groups but I think groups are measured center to center. That would make yours .432". Now, someone who is more informed than I can embarrass me by describing the correct way to measure a group.

I'm lucky if I can keep mine on the target.

Southern Son
01-25-2013, 10:27 PM
If you set a digital vernier to the same size at the boolit and then hit the zero button before you measure, you will automatically deduct the correct amount to compensate for measuring from the outside of the hole. As an example, if you are shooting a .308 cal. boolit, then you set your verniers to .308, then you zero the display. When you start measuring the group, you will have already compensated for the fact that you are measuring from the outside of the boolit holes and not the center.

Alamogunr, I use a tape measure on my groups.

Cull rate was pretty high but I haven't quite found what this mold likes yet either.

If you don't have a digital caliper, measure from left edge to left edge of the outside holes. If you have a tight enough group that you can't do this, measure total and subtract boolit dia.

I finally got around to casting some with this mold. Boolits look great. Annealed gator checks are a good snap fit. BUT I am having trouble with boolits sticking in the mold. Never had this issue on any previous MiHec or Accurate brass molds. Alloy is 50/50 COWW/linotype. They always stick on the mold side with the sprue plate and never on the other side of the mold. Anyone else have this issue?

Guess I'll spin some boolits in the cavities coated with 600 grit and see if that helps.

Yep, two of us were talking about trouble with sticking last night, particularly the second cavity up from the sprue plate hinge on the same block. Boolits tend to all stay in the left block when opened, but they don't require much more than a tap on the handle hinge bolt to shake them out after a few casting sessions. Your alloy choice is probably most of your problem, try mixing pure lead with your COWW instead of Linotype, and water-quench them. They will end up the same hardness (18-20 bhn) or possibly harder than your WW/Lino mix in a few weeks and shoot much better, not to mention cast better.

Mine is taking more than a light tap to get them out. Same cavities and side. Second one from the hinge is the worse one.

Same with mine. Was trying to put a patina on it with liver of sulpher but the brass will not take it like other brass. Wonder what the comp. of the brass is!

Gear,
What's wrong with the coww/lino mix? I get good shooting results and no mold sticking with other brass and aluminum molds. I do not like water dropping.

Thanks.

Same here. It took several good whacks to get them to drop. There were plenty of times I gave up with that cavity and just left the bullet in. It usually came out after the next round of casting, but not always. Even trying to pull it out with my hand, gloves on obviously, wouldn't work. I have a 45 mold that I use that technique on, sometimes.

I think it is a temp. problem that it is doing it. It seems to be a very fine line on whether it will come out with one rap or 5. I'm guessing it has to do with the deep square lube grove. If it had a slight taper it would let go easier. Am I right on my thinking on this?

There are a lot of molds out there with the same taper and depth lube groove..... those are heavier molds also. People's alloy choice and casting temperature have a great effect on what happens. The harder alloy you cast, usually shrinks less and takes longer for the boolit and mold cool differentially. Whether anyone believes it or not, molds and guns are individuals. There is someplace on the temperature spectrum where it works well.

The only way I got them to drop consistently is to have the mold very hot. To the point where the sprue was taking 20 seconds or more to solidify. I know I will eventually figure it out. This is the smallest caliber bullet cast for and it's in the same size blocks as the larger ones. Temp control is a learning curve right now.

Count me in with the sticking bullets problem. Left block half (side with sprue cutter mounted), middle 2 cavities. Alloy is 50/50 WW/soft lead.

I've only cast 2 sessions with it so we'll see how it works after it's good and broke in.

I checked the cavity machine depth and concentricity of boolits and can't find any machining anomaly to explain the left, second-up from the hinge cavity sticking. Probably just uneven heating. It gets better the more you cast. Keep in mind everyone, this is NOT a Lee mould, the deep, square lube groove and very precise, sharp angles and corners tend to make it a bit more difficult to "shuck" out the boolits.

Had a good run today but still can't seem to find what this mold likes to make them drop well. Had to beat the handle bolt every pour to get these.

Well so much for my good session. I'm running about a 50% cull rate.

This mold hates me. :(

That's about the cull rate my WQ boolits are coming out with this mould, usually I'm able to maintain a cull rate on an order of less than 5% after visual and another 5% or so after weight sorting with most moulds.

My culls were low. My only issue so far is having to thump too much on the handle bolt to drop them all. Have not loaded/shot any yet so......

Am I the only one not having trouble getting bullets to drop easily? About half the time all 4 drop when I open the mold and the other half a really light tap gets the one or sometimes two to fall. Doesn't seem to favor one side or the other. Lead temp is about 700 and the sprue takes 3-4 sec to turn "white". I swing the sprue plate by hand and the bullets fall out. My alloy is range lead with about 2% pewter added. Bullets are not frosted. At least that's the way I do it and it works for me.

Must be nice for them to drop like that.

My cull rate is way over 50%. Part of the reason is because of having to beat the handles to get them to drop. Right above the lube grove edge is very distorted from hanging up. I even tried to smoke the cavities. It worked for about 3 cast then right back to smacking the mold. They dropped out with the smoked cavities a little better but not perfect.

This boolit has been put on hold until I can figure out what to do with the mold. I think an aluminum mold option is needed instead of just brass.

As I have not used the mold yet, what about, O what is it called when you spin the boolit
in the cavity with some grit to polish the cavity?

You ain't using it cuz its sitting on my bench right now!

I'm in lofe with the bullet itself but I'm not impressed with the mold. Rejection rate is high. I'm having a nightmare of a time getting the thing to release. The two farthest away from the spru hinge refuse to fall from the left side without pecking the fire of my handle hinge and lots of swear words.

I may be wrong but I think the lube groove is to blame. For a groove this deep, it's too square. A radius or angle inside the groove would have helped a lot. It's my opinion the sharp square corners are causing the bullet to cling on for dear life.

It's a good thing I really like the bullet, else I'd be quite bitchy about it. I can't find an alloy that will fill out at any temp with simple ladle pouring. I've tried Linotype, COWW and even dead soft. I have to pressure cast with a ladle. Now, I will say, pressure cast COWW, air cooled, is making some darn nice bullets. Too bad it's so labor intensive. Oh well, pay to play baby!

The mold fills out fine for me using 50/50 lino/COWW at 675 degrees in a bottom pour RCBS pot. I run the mold hot and get a slight frosting on the boolits. The boolits are very well filled out and Hornady GCs are a good snap fit. Getting the devils to drop from the mold is a problem for me. I did get a good sized pile in relative short order -- just hate beating on the handle bolt.

I will shoot some this weekend.

This morning is going a little better. Using straight COWW but I'm running hot enough that they are frosting a little. Perfect fill out but the front most cavity refuses to drop free without several licks from the mallet. I've taken to running it like a three cavity. The rear three cavities are cooperating well enough.

Take your time with the mold as it will be a few weeks before I get out that way.
As I have not loaded any of the last you did, I am in no hurry, make what you want.
If you have time, make me some.

Tomme is this the same mold that is currently running from Mihec? Do you know if there have been changes to the new mold to help it drop its bullets easier? Kevin

The heavy version has tapered lube grove. So I don't know. That will be his first run of that one as this was the first version.
