View Full Version : has anyone worked with 145gr LSWC's in 10mm?

I want to start casting for my 10mm, as well as make some .40 plinker loads.
I'm wondering if the LEE 145gr SWC's can be pushed to high 10mm velocity (lets say 1500fps) without problems.

Ill be using an alloy fairly similar to Lyman #2, heat treated, and I'll gascheck them with a PB Checkmaker
(soda cans)
I'm liking the sample of TAC#1 I have, so Ill probably use that.

I want to use a light boolet to make my compensator work best.
the Precision Delta 165gr fmj's I'm using now are fine, but I'm running low.

I have been looking for fmj's that aren't plated in 155gr or lighter, but so far all I have found are Montana Gold and they are just a tad pricey.

hard to say but 1500 is really pushing the limits of a plain based bullet even in a good gun. Id consider shooting for 1200 fps and trying that first. For the most part i run cast 180s to about 1100 fps in my glock.

I've done it with great success in 357 & 44 Magnum cartridges, so I see no reason why you can't in 10mm.

My standard cast boolit load for 10mm is a Lee 175 grain TC at about 1,150 fps. In both my G20 and Smith 1006 that's pretty much the all around sweet spot for power, function and accuracy.

What powder do you intend to use? I've used Longshor in my .40 Glocks and it comes real close to the low side of 10mm velocities.

I use this boolit in my .400 corbon, it has roughly the same power level as the 10mm in this boolit weight. I do not however push them that hard but it really shouldn't be a problem with the right size and lube.

I'm going to gas check them, check the first post.
Did you mean a plain base bullet of ANY kind even, with a PB Checkmaker check?
1500fps was an arbitrary number, just to illustrate that i want to load them hot

Ill be using Winchester AutoComp. IMO it is the light bullelt (165gr and less) counterpart to Longshot. I love both of these powders!
WAC has many of the same properties as Longshot, most importantly, a very linear pressure curve. WAC has the advantage of being very low flash.
It works very well, but you have to push it hard, well over Hodgdons listed load data to get good results from it. (do this at your own risk, use your head)

Ill likely be useing BlueDot in the .40's, I just love the fireworks display :guntootsmiley:
(the .40 barrel isn't comp'd)

how fast do you move them?

to be totaly honest i have never tried homemade gas checks. But im sure it would help. Alot to will depend on your gun and how good the barrel is.

I haven't chronographed them but ball park would be 1200ish.

I frequently push 200gr BULLETS to over 1200 fps so your lighter BOOLITS should be no problem. I use a hefty dose of Accurate arms #9 as it is the cleanest burning powder I've found for 10mm.

has anyone had feeding reliability issues with SWC bullets in their glocks?

Im new to the glock 10 thing but have to agree that aa9 was about the best powder for high velocitys in my 610 smith. By the way the 145 lyman swc which is a pretty close brother to the lee bullet has been one of the most accurate if not the most accurate bullet in my 610 and my 646 smith and did real well in my berreta storm 40 too. I havent tried the lee version but my buddy has had good luck with it.

I dropped using a SWC boolits in my G20 as well as my G27 and G23. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to chamber properly. Always 1 or 2 in a magazine that failed to go into the chamber. That was with the OEM and Lone Wolf barrels.

I finally dropped the SWC and went with a Truncated Cone nose profile. All chambering problems solved.

I was afraid of that :(
I want a light bullet, does anyone make a lightweight Truncated Cone .401 bullet mold?

????

.....................................

I supose Ill just try the LEE SWC mold and see if it works in my gun, I'm not out too much money if it doesn't.

Don't know anything about the 10MM.

That said: I have used plain base bullets in .357 and .44 Mag at velocities up to 1650 fps from rifles and have done so for decades with no problems.

Currently using the Lee T358-158-SWC in a Thompson Contender and a Winchester 92. Chronographed velocities 1650 fps with excellent accuracy, and NO leading. Using LLA.

The alloy is 100% air cooled clip-on wheel weights.

I love the lee 145 swc!!! I use it in my G21 with a KKM conversion bbl, no feeding problems. I size all mine to .401 with a lee push through. Using just air cooled range scrap i get little to no leading. I get crazy-good accuracy with Power Pistol and very controllable recoil. Favorite full house loads are blue dot and Longshot but don't group as well as power pistol.

Swc is my favorite bullet type.. Love seeing those "paper punch" bullet holes.

Shoot me a PM and I'll be happy to mail you a few to test out.

As to getting bullets to drop in a barrel i just got the redding push through sizer for 10s and 40s. It takes away the glock bulge. Seems to work real well but i wish i would have bucked up the extra money and got the carbide version. I ran about 2k of brass through it yesteday and it was a bit of a work out. I did it on my smaller spare rcbs press though and it would have no doubt been a bit eaiser on a larger press. The brass will go through unlubed but youll end up with one arm a bit larger then the other after a day of it. It came with a little tub of imperial size wax which helped alot. I would like to have tried it with one shot but was out of it. I ende up using my good old standby anyhdrous lanolin and it worked even better then the imperial.

My Witness 10mm's eat SWC without any complaint. My Para P16-10 conversion is really finicky about them though. If they are at all over 1.250" COAL then I get occasional hang ups on chambering.
