View Full Version : Heavy 30 Cal ???

I have multiple TC barrels in 30 caliber with a “1 : 10” twist. Mainly thinking and deliberating with my 16.5in 308 Win in mind, what is the heaviest cast bullet one can shoot in it and still stabilize? I know just enough to scratch my head. I have a 16.5 Whisper barrel that has the standard 1 : 10 twist and everything I have read has told me that it will just not be able to shoot the big boys. I have been told by TC I “can” shoot up to a 200gr without a problem. I got a wild hair and called SSK, because of the 300 Whisper barrel, and they said I “could” shoot a 180gr, however, I got the impression that I should hold my breath… So, with all that Bla Bla Bla Bla being said, what do the real shooters know or have experience with shooting heavy 308 cast bullets. I would really like to get my hands on a NOE 311331 208gr RN / HP mold for the 308. However, I don’t want to waste my time and money if I am crippling my self from the start. It would be a great bullet for hunting and general applications. With my “shortgun” barrels, I try to look for a bullet weight around the 2100 – 2200 fps range and then cast and load accordingly. So far I have been rewarded with quite a few pleasant surprises…

Thanks for putting up with me and taking the time to read this… LOL

A 1-12" twist will shoot 200gr+ boolits, so a 1-10" is no problem. My 311299s are at least 205gr and shoot very well out of 1-10.65" twist, and in the velocity range you're looking for. The longer, heavier 311284 is often used in the 30-06 and 30-40 Krag, so there is no reason to not try that NOE mold.

You can google Greenhill formula. It was designed around black powder if I'm not mistaken but works pretty good on most guns I think. It's not the weight it's the length and most boolits are short for their weight.

I'm talkin a little over my head here.

My 30-06 loves my Accurate molds 245 that I got for my 300AAC. Remember it also has to do with velocity, the slower they are moving the more twist they need. In my 30-06 I'm shooting this boolit at 1950fps with 35g H4895, MOA.

Thanks Gents, that helps a lot!

I looked up the Greenhill formula. I laughed pretty hard when I threw in a couple of combinations from known shooting rigs.

I have four 30cals in short guns and two 30-06 rifles. I think I just need to give it a dance and see what happens.

Cast boolits will stabilize in slower twists than jacketed since they are much more dense and shorter for a given weight. I shoot that same 247gr. whisper boolit in my 1:10 30-06 and the 1:9.5 7.62x39, both subsonic, with amazingly good accuracy. If you can't get your TC to shoot it well it is not a twist rate problem.

Keep in mind you can shoot up to about 170gr. cast boolits in a 1:14 twist 30 caliber. But if shooting jacketed you'll be limited to about 125-130gr.

That is VERY good information!! I had already decided to get the NOE mold, that just nailed the lid on the coffin… LOL

FYI, mine isn't the NOE, its the Accurate, it arrived 4 days after ordering.

Exactly!
Anybody that orders a mold .30 cal. or greater dia. from NOE or MiHec is into self abuse!
Their molds are very good but the wait is loooooooong!!!!
How do I know this?
ha, ha!
I am a slow learner...:shock::veryconfu:shock:

Don't get me wrong, I have both a NOE and a Mihec, I would gladly own another, but it IS a seriously long wait and the Accurate molds are also great molds.

My 1917 American Enfield (original barrel) likes Accurate mold 32-L(Lyman 314299) 200;grain.

There were several twist/stability programs listed when the NOE 311-247 BLACKOUT mold was being discussed , do the search thing or google JBM stability

I didn’t even know that JBM had that program, THANK YOU!

:awesome:

I use JBM all the time for their ballistic software…
