I have a decent scanner and have found I often get better results from a $99 digital camera and it is a smaller file.

here are the drawings, hope you can make them out, my camera sucks. the disc punch is made out of 3/4" stock, drill a hole close to the end the same size of the disc diameter, cut a slot toward the bottom, the edge of the slot should be right at the back edge of the hole, that way the punch rod will be easier to remove. the punch rod is the drill bit you drilled the hole with, grind the shank end of the drill bit flat, with sharp edge. use a plastic or wood mallet to punch out the disc. the forming rod is made out of 2 pieces, the long piece is the same dia. as the disc dia. the short piece is the same dia. as the shank dia. as the boolit shank dia. use the closest size of rod you can, chuck the short piece in a drill motor and use emery cloth or sand paper to bring it down to size. drill a hole in the long piece about 3/8" deep, it must be in the center, epoxy or loctite the short piece into it. that is the forming rod.the die body is a 1" piece of stock, it can be round or square, drill a hole the same size as the check diameter all the way through, then drill out the hole the same size as the disc dia. drill it 3/4" deep. break the edge between the transition of the disc size hole and the check size hole, you want it smooth. to use, punch out a disc and put into the hole in the die body, you may have to push it down with the shank end of the drill bit, then insert the forming rod into the die body and wack with a soft mallet. you now have a check. I made the die body out of alu. for the photos, I don't know how long it would last. I think brass would last a while, steel would last forever.brass would be easier to work with. you can make the check maker with a hand drill, thats what I used to make this one with, but a drill press would make it a whole lot easier.:bigsmyl2: photos follow.- I used a cheap transfer punch set to make this one, it is 30 cal. heat the transfer punches to anneal them so they can be drilled. good sourse for odd size stock.

Excellent work. I like the simplicity.

This is how I've been making most of my gas checks for a while now. I used
some of my Lee bullet sizers to cut out my disks. I just needed to cut a slit in the top of
my sizers die to slide my aluminum strip into.

The good thing about this is that I can still use the dies to size my bullets too.

Forming the checks is done basically the same way though.

Very slick Ed! Simple to make with very few tools. Very nice job.

I came up with a simple check maker myself though not as easy to make as yours is and you do need a lathe... unless you can find a good selection of gasket/hole punches in the right size for disk punches. Your idea of using the drill bit for a punch is great.

I had not posted the plans as they were drawn up after I made the check maker and posted, but I have shared with any that asked. Since you started a good thread here is seems like a good idea to add to the info here.

My original post is here:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=82989

and pdf drawings for .30 cal. check maker attached. I have added a short piece of rubber hose to the forming punch shank so it pops back up out of the die like a spring rebound. That helps remove the check from the punch.

I should also mention that your one stroke gas check maker post/book has info on disk and gas check shank sizes that is very useful to anyone making a gas check maker. Thanks for that!

Longbow

PS: The drawings should print out on 8 1/2" x 11" paper

Thanks Ed for posting the information. Been casting handgun bullets for just a little over 2 months. Just bought a mold to do 30 caliber bullets and need to make my own has checks. I hope I can build this. So all you need is some stock, drill and hacksaw right? Really appreciate this information and I send prayers your way for your issues I have read through these postings.

Probably a dumb question, but what more could you expect from me?

How do you determine the OD size of the blank?

I'm going to want some PB checks and trying to determine the OD of the disk has got me puzzled. I figure the forming punch size will be determined by the base diameter and the material thickness. (Correct?)

Is it trial and error, educated guess or some type of formula?

Thanks,

little willie

go to the next page and open DIY check maker book, it will tell you how calulate the disc size.

+ a whole bunch on hoping your health is improving, Ed. Thanks for following up with us on this thread, too. A hundred bucks is a lot of money for some of us so spend on a proven commercial design, this on only costs a little time and a couple of chinese drill bits to sacrifice for the tool.

Not sure where it is buried here now but some time back a fellow posted about a really simple check maker he made with very few tools. He used wooden blocks to hold washers with holes drill to size in them to shear disks and form check cups. IIRC he used a drill bit shank as the male forming punch.

In any case, it was very simple and seemed to work well for him. That would have been posted at least three years ago I think but a search for home made check makers might turn it up.

Would anyone have the drill bit/die diameters for a .308 gas check maker? I built a check maker but my measurements didn't make par, (DOH!) so I ended up with something that might work in .32 caliber, but is too big for my 7.62 and .308 caliber.

firefly1957
09-01-2013, 11:32 AM
It you measure what you did then just subtract the amount you are over you would get the correct size for your method.

Another option could be to try them as is and see if they work as they will size somewhat to fit but if you can not keep them centered accuracy will suffer.

Oh sure now I just HAVE to make me one of these! Do I need to? NO! Do I have time to? NO! Do I have things I should be doing instead of this? DEFINATELY! Will I probably end up doing this anyways? YES!

Thanks for sharing your great idea!
