What type of cutter did you use? I can't find the right cutter for my milling machine other than a dovetail cutter.

You can use a regular endmill, just position the rod at a 45 degree angle.

I used 90º dovetail cutter, it can be done with 45º cutter but you go around twice.
If you can tilt your rotary 45º or head 45º as said normal slot drill / end mill will do.
