Does anyone shoot a contender pistol in 30 carbine?
I was wondering if you loaded heavy for caliber boolits?
Like 150 gr boolits @ 1200 fps?
I figured with no cylinder gap (like a blackhawk) loading long might be possible.

I don't have a contender barrel in 30 carbine, but I know some guys shoot 150 gr. bullets for handgun silhouettes so I know it can be done. Just do some google searches.

I don't know about the fps but I have launched some 144 gr bullets from my T/C 30 carbine 10" bull barrel. I do have a 150 Gr I want to try however.

I have a 6" Bullberry custom barrel in 30 Carbine. I could push out 150's but am happy enough using the 115 RCBS to drop hogs.

My single shot is a .30-30 Wichita International. I loaded it with mild loads and 168 gr. Sierra match bullets for silhouette. The .30-30 has more capacity without being ridiculous like the .308 and easily allows much heavier bullets than the .30 Carbine, but that is just me. Your mileage may vary.

I have a RPM XL in 30/20 AKA 32/20 with a .308 bore, close to a 30 carbine! my go to bullet is the RCBs 165 gr sil bullet @ 1,250 fps, super accurate @ 100 yards
If you would like some load data for the 30 carbine with heavy cast & jacketed bullets form a old IHMSA magazine ? let me know.

I never tried heavier than 115's in mine. It's been a while but there was some article that had info on Contender loading in 30 carbine, maybe Handloader magazine. IIRC there were 2 different barrel twists tried by the author.

It would be worth trying 150's in a standard barrel, it works for those that try heavies in their 44 mag rifles, sometimes.

I don't know if T/C ever had more than one twist but I think there is a possibility of a faster twist barrel available from someone.

I shot a custom Bullberry .30 Carbine barrel for a few years and used 150 grain cast with good results.

There was an article in the Fouling shot some years back where they were using 200 grain plus cast in the .30 Carbine and .32-30 barrels for sillouhette shooting with good results but I haven't tried it. The barrels may have had to have special throating.

About that time, I received a Bullberry 7.62 X 39mm barrel and got sidetracked. Chambered 7.62 X 39mm with a 1.5" case so that military ammo and pressure wouldn't be a problem with a .308" barrel.

Just lost interest in the .30 Carbine after that./beagle

I just got my barrel from the UPS guy.[smilie=w:
I cleaned it and it looks fabulous.

It must have been custom built by Mike Bellm.
It is 18" long.
says 30 carbine
with Bellm
all listed on theside of the locking lug/mount.

It has 1-10 RH twist, 4 land/groove (not equal widths)
with pistol spacing for the forend.
and a recessed target crown.

I believe I could get some serious accuracy with heavy boolits from this baby.

He might have welded a 30 cal. rifle barrel to a contender block then reamed it to 30 carbine

The 30 carbine is a notourus case strecher , you will have to trim every few reloads if close to full loads will be used as the 30 M1 headspaces on the case mouth! and only partial size the neck or neck size as deep as the bullet seats in the case and no more for best accuracy!
Some loads from IHMSA magazine , these are ram loads and my be max ? so start at least 10% lower & work up.

Well, kitchen renovations are almost done. So,I will have time to play.
The barrel bore is .300 with a groove of .3075.
Mike Bellm cut a tight chamber with a great throat.
I had some left over boolits from a lee .312 185 gr round nose mold so, I made a dummy round to check seating depth,

Sized .309
Overal length is 2.05" and it closes easily

Now I have a starting point.
The 150 gr load with RL7 will get a ladder workup.

Increase the soupcan load

And see what that brings.
Cast this morning.
Shot this afternoon.
Zero leading.
Good day overall.
Range 25 yrds.

Back to the range today.
soup can using W296 was able to step it up to 2175 fps.
lee 150 gr fp (30-30 boolit) using 2400 was able to get it up to 1836 fps
RL 7 just couldn't fit enough in to run fast enough. lots of uncombusted granuals in bore.
no pressure signs in either loading, might go fwd slowly and check for accuracy.
[smilie=w:
The 296 with lighter boolits and 2400 with heavyer both burned clean with no leading.
