43200 Is it possible to make a swage boolit look just like that?

Anything is possible, but it's the expense of doing it that makes it hard. I cast a bullet similar to that for my .45-120 Sharps, and even though I enjoy swaging, I much prefer to cast that type of bullet, since it would take a multi-part swaging die that would be capable of opening up to release the bullet.

The other option would be swaging a smooth sided bullet and then adding cannelures for the lube. I believe the Corbin Cannelure machine is capable of doing four cannelures at a time, but not sure. They would also be relatively shallow and would probably require sizing again at the same time as lubing. It's also an expensive machine.

Hope this helps.

This boolit is for black powder cartridge and would need a good amount of lube. A friend of mine has a swaging rig that he may sell me that he used to make paper patched boolits. I could use that to make paper patch but if its silly to make a boolit similar to that one with 4 grease grooves then I may just pass on it since I could just buy a high quality paper patch mold for alot less money

Yep, you'd need a good amount of soft lube for that purpose. That's probably why most blackpowder bullets are cast, rather than swaged, with the exception of paper patch bullets.

I have a friend who is a commercial reloader, specializing in obsolete calibers. He may be interested in your friend's paper patch swaging die, depending on caliber, if you're not going to buy it. He was asking me if I had one the other day, but I don't remember what caliber he was asking about.

Swage a slug with the basics on it and then buy a box of Loob Grooves from Wiljen and apply as needed. :)

(couldn't resist, sorry.) :)

You sure about that I thought it was Waksupi

Yes you can swage that bullet but it would take a 2 die set. you also would have to roll a cannelure in place of the Lube grooves. Or you could do what I do and just knurl the bearing surface and tumble lube in 45/45/10

I'm not sure that would have enough lube to soften the blackpowder fouling. Something like SPG is preferred, and lots of it.

Hope this helps.

You might be better off paper patching a smooth sided bullet than using a grooved bullet.

Well what do you guys think. Is a swaged paper patched Boolit that much better than a cast one?

for black powder...yes.
for smokeless you want the grooves. [and quite often a harder alloy than pure]
swaging will remove voids if you swage down enough to bleed some of the core off.

I don't know if this will help, but I have noticed that if I take a cast bullet with lube grooves in it and the swage it to a larger caliber that a portion of the grooves remain. As I said, don't know if that will help or not.

What kind of difference have you guys seen with the swaged boolits. Are they better than grease groove boolits?

I swage so I can make a jacked bullet that will function well in my Desert Eagle. I have noticed marked improvement in my SBH also.

fwiw- Herter's used to make an "alligator" swaging die that swaged a boolit with lube grooves, but just in pistol stuff as I remember.

That won't even come close to cutting it for black powder. The fouling would be so hard you could pave a road with it.

That would be the wisest choice!

Mr Corbin says it can be done although he did admit he likes paper patch better. Eventually I am going to try it. I did get the press and for now I am going to at around with this paper patch stuff for now.

Lube cookie is the solution.
