Nice revolver. I got an SP101 not long ago in .357 and just love it. By the way did you get the primers??

Mine's a 2+" version with bobbed hammer; I shot an armadillo off the back porch with it a few years back, about 10pm-with a CorBon125gr load. I now mentally refer to it as my "hand held nuclear device." I imagine the neighbors thought I'd bought a surplus flamethrower......

I have one with the 2 1/4" barrel that I sometimes carry as a back up. I have shot a number of rounds through her and she has yet to fail me and accuracy was great for the little Ruger. My mom liked mine so much she bought herself one with the bobbed hammer to carry.
I refer to my SP 101 as "5 for sure"

I carried a short barreled SP101 DAO with the bobbed hammer as a primary concealed gun for years. Excellent, reliable gun, built like a tank. It has a Magnaport job that helps tame muzzle climb. Dry firing it 1000+ times really helped with the trigger. It is the only .357 snubbie that I can shoot comfortably because it is a little heavier than the Smith and Taurus guns.
I don't carry it as much anymore because I picked up one of the Taurus 45LC titanium snubbies. It is less comfortable to shoot, but I am a sucker for big bore revolvers.

My son was shooting his .38 Sp. M101 at the range one day, using moderate wadcutter loads. The barrel broke off and went about 15 yards downrange.
Ruger fixed it without comment.
I tried researching the failure; someone said Stainless Redhawks had failures like this attributed to using the wrong kind of lube to turn the barrel into the frame. It set up stress fractures in the barrel shank.
Thought you might like to look at an unusual event.

That is sure an interesting event. It certainly looks like the Redhawk syndrome. As Riley used to say, "What a revolting development this is!!"

Manufacturers can be "had" by situations beyond their control sometimes, too. I have a rather early RedHawk (.44 magnum) and have shot literally thousands of rounds through it. So far, so good...

My little SP101 .32 Magnum is still in the hands of my pistolsmith. Guess he figures he ought to have it more than me:( .

Just so happens to be my "go to" gun when I feel the need. I have both barrel sizes (short and shorter) in .357 Mag and have been quite impressed with the accuracy of both of them. As far as an out of the box revolver goes I can't think of a better one, my first choice for sure.

I tried the aftermarket grips pictured and found them to be a dissapointment for me and very unusable for my wife, factory grips are the way to go for me as well as most of the people I have talked to.

Cast 158 grain SWC handloads at 1100 fps have proven to be most accurate and quite pleasant to shoot. With the accuracy I have experienced from mine, I feel the SP101 in .357 Mag to be my best bet when the S.H.T.F.!

Hell, I can shoot my SP101's as well as my '58 vintage High Standard Supermatic!

I might not be able to shoot a handgun as well as I would like but I can shoot an SP101 .357 Mag. as well as I could ever hope to!

My sis in Bozeman has an SP-101 in 357 Magnum, and it is one fine little revolver.

Those pics of the parted barrel are disquieting, for sure. So far, my R-hawk is still fully assembled--this with about a 2,000 round history. (Shudder)

I just picked one of these up on Thursday. Shot a few J-bullets on friday and I am hooked. I was using H-110 (I bought 8# on wed.) and it is definately stout. I auctioned off my two Makarovs in favor of this one because I am sick of chasing brass. I know where all five brass are when the wheel is empty on this one.

So what are good mould recommedations?

I have an SP101 in .357. I still like Skeeter's load in it. Lyman 358156 over a dose of 2400. For the shorter barrel a faster burning powder might be more appropriate but I have a couple .357s with longer barrels, so I just enjoy the fireworks with the snubbie. Any good 38 SWC would be a good choice. Glenn Fryxell has written a bunch of very, very good articles including one on .38 SWC. Look for it over at www.handloads.com/articles if you are interested.

The club I shoot IDPA at had a bug gun match and I actually shot the sp 2" pretty darn good!

The accuracy was a little bit open, but what the heck I was moving and shooting so anything in the middle I consider good.

That will be my weapon of choice for the next bug match.

It was shootin better then most of the small autos!
