Some time back I sent Buckshot a gas checked 240 gr. , 44 cal. mold with instructions to remove the g/c shanks and leave me with .432" drive bands.

I received a new Lyman .431 H & I die today. It is dead nuts on at .431". I pushed one of these bullets through the cylinder mouth of my Smith 624, 44 Spec. It is TIGHT ! I also have a .430 " H and I die, ......Hopefully one of them will deliver the kind of accuracy I'm looking for.

The bullet now weighs 248 grs. less any lube. Might just work out real well in my .44 Spec. ? ? ?

The Lyman .431 H&I Die I have is .4305, or .0005 smaller, as are Balisti-Cast to allow for lead spring-back. If you water drop the spring-back can be .001 or more.

Nice Gun!

Ben;
Your 624 is one of the premier .44 Special handguns - as good as has been made. I have had one since they hit the market (actually, two - a 4" and a 6½" like yours). One of the best targets I ever shot was shot with my 6½", standing at 25 yards:

My most used load is a 250 gr. Keith (currently a Mihec mould in both solid point and hollow point) ahead of 7.5 grs of Unique (the Skeeter load). That's what I was using when I shot this target.

You sure that crimp groove is big enough? :kidding::bigsmyl2:

Like my RCBS 44-250-K, very large and deep crimp groove.

That should be a winner.

Bill,

I'm like you....A dog could fall off in that crimp groove and never be heard from again.

I thought that was a second lube groove... ;)

I have used it for that.....but the truth is , as Bill has pointed out, it is a VERY large and deep crimp groove.

Looks like it ought to work just fine Ben. I would think it'd be pretty hard to go wrong with that sixgun.

Bill is right ! Take a look at the "lube" groove on the RCBS 44-250-K (right) ! :)

That was my point! Thanks for the photo, far from home and didn't have one already online
to show.

RCBS 44-250-K has pretty much the biggest crimp groove that I know of.

NOT a complaint, this is a great boolit - one of my favorites.

I thought that the crimp groove on my bullet was large, but that RCBS 250 grainer , well.............now that is a crimp groove.

How about a little Ben’s Red on some of those boolits?

Sure would be nice to see some of them all prettied up with their red dresses on.

I fear you turned a great mold into an average on. Ive got two smith 44 spec and two ruger 44 special and all 4 of them use that 240 swcgc as there most accurate bullet. The only other bullet that comes close is the lyman 215 swcgc. I know some guys hate to buck up and buy gas checks but back in the day when i was new to casting it took the gas check off a couple molds and neither one shot near as well as they did as gas checked molds. You might get lucky doing it but i doubt it. That 240 rcbs swcgc bullet is probably the single most accurate 44 bullet in that weight range that ive ever tested. Ill gladly buy gas checks for it.

I've already shot this one in a variety of 44 Mag. revolvers and rifles. I have no complaints.

The S&W 624s shoot extremely well. You might try your boolit cast very soft with 4.0 gr. of Bullseye. My load is with the 429383 sized 0.431" and that load.

45 2.1 :

In this day of " Keith Style " mania, the round nose bullet in revolvers seems to have had its popularity diminished somewhat.

However, you're right, it can be a real shooter .... often times matching or exceeding the accuracy levels of other bullet styles.

Thanks,
Ben

Ben, in my particular revolver, it would match 22 target rifle accuracy with an almost unbelieveable 1 fps velocity spread. I took it prarie dog hunting one year when the closer shots got boring. Being a RN, you had to shoot them in the head to recover them for photos............

I love my Keiths, but I will concede that many times the most accurate is the round nose.

Reality sucks, but there you go.
