Hi everyone [smilie=s: I am wanting to start casting bullets for my Ruger Scout rifle it has 1/10 twist with a 16.5" barrel in 308. What would be a better choice for a bullet for this rifle and I need to add the bullet will be used in a 3006 also but the main use will be for the Scout rifle .

I don't know that I can help you much but the first question these guys will ask is want do you want to do with it.

I have the Lyman 311041 that I shoot in my 30-06 and 30-30 and really like it. I think the Lee C-309-170 F is a very close copy. So far I've been shooting 2400 with 20 grs for the 06 and 17 grs for the 30-30 both shoot a little above 1700 fps with good accuracy.
I shoot a softer alloy than most and this is as fast as I can go in my 10 inch twist barrels without exceeding the RPM threshold. My boolit weighs 177 gr and this is fast enough for me to hunt with.

There's lots of experience on here with the 308 and I'm sure someone will be along to help you out.

Lyman's 311299 or the RCBS308-168-SIL, 30-180-SP or the 308-200-SIL.

Saeco #315(175gr), #307(185gr), #301(200gr), Lyman 311644 (200gr). If your 308 has a long throat you'll need a long boolit to fit. I'm using a Saeco #307. Another long bodied boolit to look at is the 311284. Its a good fit in my 308, but too long to work through the magazine. The Saeco #307 works through the magazine. It looks like a 311041 but is longer and about 10gr heavier.

Cast boolit shooters on other forums reported problems with bore riders, as the Ruger Scout has a short throat. Mine will not accept the Lee 185, but will take the 165. I also found that the diameter of the neck is critical; the boolit must be .308, not .310. Found this out my smoking the neck of dummy loaded cartridges and chambering them. The .310 will not allow chambering the case.

I have a 16.5in Encore in 308. I took it out a couple of weeks ago and shot a 2in group with it at 100 using a Lee 170gr FP. I will look up my loading notes tomorrow and see what I can’t find.

I would also look at Lyman’s loading data for a 15in Encore in 308. It might be a good starting point at least…

I've been asked this weekend to work up some loads for a 308 with the 311299 boolit,I'd like to use slow powders like 4831 but would also like to try some 4895,should I use dacron with the 4895?. Pat

Ok, I found my data…

I am shooting a Lee 170gr HCGC with 45gr RL7 @ 2200 FPS out of my 16.5in Encore barrel with CCI primers. It was a 2in groups at 100. Bullets were lubed with ALOX and sized to .309. I have already sized a few more at .311 to see what they will do…

if the neck is that tight, then that might be an issue shooting cast, as .308 might not be fat enough.

have you tried thinner brass, or turned some brass down for cast only cartridges?

Don't need the filler with H4895, but it might help.

Probably a lot.

Start at 28 gr with the 311299 and use a 1/2 3/4 gr dacron filler. Work up to 32 gr. Best accuracy will be in the 29 - 31 gr range depending on which flavor and lot of 4895.
