Nice job.

Try Laural mountain walnut stain on maple.

The best stain I have found for a warm dark color is Birchwood Casey Plum Brown. It has enough nitric acid in it to react very well on maple, really brings out the curl.

I used it on the stock of this caplock pistol built for my daughter several years ago.

I like my blond curly maple grip on my H&R 676. I dug the wood out of my dad's firewood bin.

I have used nitric acid, heat and the powder used to clean iron filters, can't remember it but I still have some around someplace, potassium something. It was purple when wet but turned wood a deep brown.
I went through all the old time stuff with muzzle loaders and the need to buffer the acids. The horrible grain raising, etc.
Laural Mountain stain is the absolute best. I even used the walnut ( they have maple, cherry, etc too.) on cherry.
Here is what it looks like.

I have been playing with some cherry. This is with no stain.

Wonderful! I love cherry.
I am making a box for a friends DE out of walnut. Another friend gave me a can of oil stain to try. I have some white sapwood on the box and I did not like the stain. It went into the pores and left the white wood white with little dark spots. I like it natural better.
This is what I have so far.

Thats why I use WaterLox unless I am trying to pop the grain on curly or birdseye wood. I few coats and a good buffing.

You will love Laural Mountain, it makes the grain really pop out.
I had test sticks with all stains. Most stains were sad. Some ruined the grain. They were made to even the color, now why would you want to even the color? Enhance the wood, never hide it.
I love your work, you love real wood.

I truly enjoy curly Maple grips - I had a nice set made for a 1911 several years ago. IMHO, Pilkington's (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=9816/Product/CLASSIC-SPIRIT-STAINS) Brown and Gold Spirit Stain is da bomb for Maple!
