MiHec 360640 4 cavity brass Cramer HP
This is a run of an earlier design produced by BRP. This will be a four cavity, single crimp groove, cramer brass HP mold that is suitable for the 38 Special, 357 Magnum and other suitable caliber handguns with cylinders long enough to suit them. It will cast at 0.360". The original weight was about 140 gr as a hollow point, which is the only way i've shot it. The nose design is exactly like the 359640 as made by MiHec ahead of the crimp grooves. It is VERY accurate as can be attested to by several board members here in either design. A blank plug could provide that as well as a round and penta HP depending on what was wanted. The following is the discussion thread.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=145131

We will need fifteen to commit to this. We will run this until we get the number we need or more. Price is $120 with one set of pins included plus $16 for each extra pin set wanted plus $20 shipping.

Pin options: 1) large HP, 2) penta HP, 3)blank pin for flat nose Edit: If the HP pins are not suitable for reversal to a solid, the blank pins come with the price of the mold. If you do not want the HP pin sticking out of the base of the mold, in the case of reversable pins, you can order a set of blank pins for a smooth mold bottom.
Please list your Forum name and your e-mail address in suitable form and the pin options you think you want along with the number of molds.

kingcoats357 Ahat yahoo daht com. One mold with round pins, I am assumeing (I know, I know) that the hollow point pins will be reversable in order to make a standard flat nose bullet also? I understand that the hollow point pin hangs below the bottom of the mold with this set up, I own four other MiHec molds and don't have a problem with this. Thanks Dennis

Miha has been cutting the cramer HP smaller than the base of the plug on most of the never ones (especially the smaller calibers). I don't think what went before will work now. That is why the blank pin set was shown.

I'll ask him. His current method is as described. The old method seems to have been surplanted in the smaller calibers.

Bob, did you even try to find out if the hollow point pins are reversible and will work for flat points. Dennis

Dennis, here is his answer:
Yes, I all ways do reversible pins. If this is not possible I include blank pins by default. I do not charge for it.

I did not know he did not charge for them in that case. In the case of smaller noses, the cramer cut in the cavity won't let it be reversed..... thereby the blank pin for solids. So it seems you can get what you want without paying for an extra pin set. It seems I have some GB set-ups to change now.

Guys. I have the 359640 mold with the double crimp groove. They are awesome and you can turn the hollow point pins around so you can cast solid points. The blank pins are not needed.

lead_her_fly

I have a bunch of Miha's moulds. In fact, I just ordered another off of his website. The blank pins are a must if you do not want to run the risk of damaging your hollow point pins. It will depend on your personal needs/desires in regards to what you cast. If you do more solids than anything else, $16 for the extra pins is not going to break the bank. That is only one trip to McDonalds and I am sure most of us would do better if we would avoid that garbage anyway.

If you are going to cast all HP, then, no, there is no reason to get the blank pins.

Just my 2 cents worth..........

How long is the nose? 0.340" meplat to crimp groove. I trim brass slightly for the Marlin lever actions, but they can have their carrier length extended also (easy to do). I want to make sure it will cycle in my Marlin. I already own a 360-640 but it's a double crimp groove and drops solids at 170. What makes this GB bullet lighter? The boolit is shorter.

It could be....... but several people have tested this design extensively, out of lever actions and handguns..... at obscene ranges. The plain base version outshot the gas check version and the hollow point version out shoots the solid version.

I just paid using a Visa and PayPal made the Euro/Dollar conversion and it went through just fine.
It appears Miha included shipping and the extra pins and rounded it all off to 120 Euros. This comes very close to the
$120 + Shipping + extra pins when calculated in dollars.

Now I am waiting for that "light" 125 grain version of this very same mold ! :) :)

They're not accepting your Visa CC because you don't have an account. All you have to do is create a PayPal account and link it to your CC, then you can pay the invoice and it'll be charged to the CC you used to create the PayPal account. I know it's a PITA but it is the best plan going right now.

Thanks, I have some LBT WFN that I'm using to check. Those won't quite work in my N frames at .340 by about .010 because of the ogive on the bullet (or lack thereof).

Got mine in the mail this afternoon. Waiting for the pot to get hot and finish the honeydos.

Well, I fell in love with this beauty to the extent that I didn't even clean it up and started casting as soon as the pot got hot. With my alloy I'm dropping the large cavity at 146.6 to 146.9 with some outliers of 145.9-147.2. I set up to cast 2 large cavity and two penta. The penta were even closer, since I culled them because of a fill-out problem with one cavity (I think I need to tighten the sprue plate a little) and ranged from 149.6 to 152 with the majority being 151.7. That is about to spec 5 gr difference. I'll probably be happier once I clean it up and use it a few times so it's broken in.

Look`s like I have to email Mihec, I got the mold today and it look`s great but when I put the HP pins in it the mold will not close, about 0.020 open , I think the problems are with the pins , I tryed both sets and it`s the same. I have 18 other molds from Mihec , and they all work great . I was thinking of just puting it in my big vice and cranking it down but I could not bring myself to try that, anybody have the same problems?????:Fire:

castalott
06-17-2013, 05:05 PM
I have a Miha mold with the same problem....always work on the cheap part is my rule so I used sandpaper and a stone to work the diameter of the pins. Work slow & check frequently. It took me an hour to do 4 pins but the mold is a JEWEL now. Be careful to not damage the beautiful brass mold as I am sure the pins are easily replaced. (Don't force the mold halves together---gentle as a baby's smile is the rule here...)

Iron Mike Golf
06-17-2013, 06:03 PM
Before you sand or stone the guide pins, try running them loose. You might need to use a Torx bit to loosen the pins. Mine loosened OK, but a couple let the hex wrench slip a bit. Don't use pliers on the guide pins. I remove the guide pins from the HP pins and then reassemble in the mold block. I don't like passing the e-clip groove through the mold block.

Run the guide pins in finger tight, then back of a very fine red hair. The HP assembly should move back and forth in the mold block by its own weight.

This is common to Mihec's cramer style molds and what he recommends.

Mine arrived today, by the by!

I asked too soon, got it today and it looks great! Hopefully I will get a chance to try it out this weekend.

Just lube the pins, preheat the mold and give them few dry runs.
Pins will seat inn.

Usually people look at cold mold......

What loads are you all planning to try?

I am hoping to find loads that work well in both my Blackhawk and Rossi M92. I have such for the 358429 and 358477. I'll be starting with H110 and 2400.

My mould apparently came yesterday but for some reason this time it required my signature for delivery, a departure from all previous MiHec mailings, and since I wasn't home at the time the postman came I had to go to the USPS distribution center to retrieve it today. As usual, it's a thing of beauty and I can't wait to start casting beautiful boolits!!! As far as the tight pins, I've use both methods mentioned above - loosening the pins and then retightening them once the working portion (blank pin, round HP pin, penta HP pin) are seated in the mould and also I've just cleaned the mould and pins really thoroughly, lubed the pins with the supplied lube, heated up the mould and started casting. Both methods have worked well so now I usually use a combination of the two methods and this has essentially solved virtually all problems that I've encountered with pins that, initially at least, don't want to seat completely.

As far as loads for this boolit are concerned, I'll probably go with my old standard which is 10gr of Blue Dot. This has been my go-to load for many years and it's the one I've been using with the double crimp groove configuration of this boolit. I haven't chrono'ed any of these but I've been getting very tight groups at 15 to 25 yards. While I've tried other powders, I somehow find myself coming back to this one when I want consistency. I shoot this load in both the round HP and penta HP versions of the double crimp groove boolit and in both my S&W 6" 686 and my Ruger 4" GP100 as well as my Taurus 65 2" barrel. Easy on the hand in the two heavier wheelguns but a bit harder in the 2" Taurus. I have a fair amount of Unique available so I think I'll try to work up a load using that power, one that I can shoot in the 2" Taurus without hammering my hand, which is getting fairly arthritic nowadays, quite so hard. Any suggestions as to a load with Unique would be appreciated.

My last few molds have required a signature. You don't have to pick it up. Go to the website listed on the pink form they leave and schedule a redelivery for the next day. Sign the form and leave it in your mailbox. Next day the mold will be in your hands :)

I thought I received the wrong mold because there is no gas check. Then I realized this one isn't the light version

Considering the fact that the trip to the USPS Distribution Center is less than 15 minutes - I live in a fairly small town, not a big city - and it's fairly close to many of our usual shopping areas, it was just easier to drive over and pick up the package. But thanks for reminding me of the fact that redelivery can be arranged quite easily.

It sure is hard not to get excited about custom boolit molds. Remember the days of ordering a mold and hoping and praying that if was gonna be off that it would at least be oversized???? Major brands were a 50/50 proposition AT BEST and even some custom builders couldn't get it right. Ordered a CUSTOM mold and specified an as-cast diameter of .303 with #2 alloy and got one that cast .297 (worn out cherry). When I complained the response was "wrap it in more paper"!!!!!

Anyway, I just got another work of art today from MP molds. The molds I've gotten from MP and NOE cast within .0005" of published diameter and the finish is always mirror bright!!!!! I admit it......I'm spoiled!! It sure amazes me though at how fast I can forget about the "old days". I am thankful that I found this site, and for the bounty we all enjoy from the likes of Miha and Al. Thanks to them, the Honchos and others we enjoy the finest boolit makin tools that can be had!!!!

Thanks folks.

Got mine in the mail yesterday--11 days from date of paypal transaction. Going to fire up the pot this morning and get to work, If I can bring myself to mar this gorgeous pice of machinery. The brass gleams like gold, and the bluing is rich and dark, it is almost too pretty to use--but only, "almost." Thank you Mister Previc.

First off, I'm NOT an engineer, metallurgist or mathematician but the fact that heating up the mould and then putting it through a few dry runs seems to let the pins 'seat' properly got me to thinking so I looked up the linear and volumetric coefficients of expansion for both brass and steel. Turns out that brass has a linear coefficient of expansion of 19 and a volumetric coefficient of expansion of 57 while steel has a linear coefficient of expansion of 9 - 13 dependent upon alloy composition and a volumetric coefficient of expansion of 30 - 39, again dependent upon alloy composition, all coefficients expressed as (10-6/0C) @ 20 0C. The difference in expansion coefficients would appear to explain why heating up the mould seems to allow the pins to 'settle in', so to speak, since the brass mould body will expand slightly more than the steel pins, thus allowing them to more easily slide in and out of the mould.

I'm sure there are contributors to this forum who are much more knowledgeable in regard to these things and I'd appreciate any/all comments and/or criticism on my conclusions.

My observation on HP pins: the guide pins are not always parallel to each other when torqued in. Sometimes it's just a few thousandths of an inch. Sometimes you can detect it with the naked eye. That meas that at least one, if not both, of the guide pins is not orthogonal to the HP pin.

Most of the time, running the mold up to operating temp expands the guide holes enough to accommodate this. But not always. Especially if you can see with your eye that they are not parallel.

My preference is to loosen the guide pins. I'm talking 1/16th of a turn backed off from finger tight. The HP pin moves in and out of the mold block under its own weight and has enough float to easily center itself between both mold blocks without "clicking" into place.

I think that mine has arrived. Got a note from the Post Man saying come and pickup a package. Since I am too broke to have bought anything else of late and my luck isn't good enough for it to be something free, it must be the mould.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!! Of course, if Australia Post actually did their job, I would have had it yesterday. Dropping a card in my letter box while I am at home saying that it is waiting at the Post office is rubbish. The get paid to DELIVER it to the address on the parcell. Not say "Come and pick it up." If they need a signature and I ain't at home, OK, but I was at home, and had both my dogs inside with me (so they cannot say that my dogs chased them off.

Cast my first batch with the new mold this evening. It is my third MiHec mold, and, in my opinion, the best of the three. After getting hot, the pins slid very nicely and the bullets dropped right out most of the time. Cast of range scrap, bullets measured .361 and 149 grains (large hollow point). LBS

Well, I'm not the greatest bullet caster or greatest photographer, but since no one else has posted any pics yet, and since some guys are still waiting for their mold, here's a picture of my first batch after sizing/lubing in one of Chris's Star dies with Carnauba Red. I'm planning to start with 5.5 grains Unique and work up to 6.0 grains---hopefully this Saturday. LBS
