Looking for a mould that will make a good hunting bullet for my 30-30. Used mainly on whitetail deer in PA woods. Would like it to drop around .310-.311 and 160 to 170 grain with WW. Been using the LEE 309-170F with less then good resualts. Pictures of your cast bullets would be helpful. Thanks

I've also found the 31141 to be good. Also the 311291, similar with a round nose. I just recently got a Ranch Dog 165 grain flat nose but haven't cast any yet to try, should be a good one as well.

Take a look at the Ranch Dog .311-170RF. Also you can never go wrong with a Lyman 311041 especially a older one..........Terry

I have a new Lyman 311041 and it drops boolits @ .309 which is fine for me as my guns all slug .308. This appears to me to be very close to what you already have.

+ another for the 311041, especially when HP'd and cast soft.

31141, 31141, 31141, 31141, or a 31141. If you can't find one of those, try Lyman's 311041.

+1 on the RD311165. Big flat nose. It's a Lee 6x but for $10 he will make 3 PB. I had to clean up the bases on a couple PB cavities, but with your alloy it should drop ~.311-.312.

I use #311041 sized @ .310" in my late-70s Win 94. Good stuff, to 2100 FPS. If it goes into the deer woods, the boolits would be BruceB Cast Softpoints. The simple (but a little slow) procedure is stickied on this site. 20 of them will last several seasons, and their ballistics in the several calibers I've tried doesn't vary one iota from castings poured in homgenous alloy.

Man this is something I too was interested in, but was hoping the choices was narrowed down some. lol

Has anyone had good luck using the 311042 in a 308 too.

Thanks for the help guys. I thing I will get one of the lyman 311041. I like the Ranch Dog bullets except for the tumble lube design. If I could get it with regular lube grooves it would be great. Thanks let you know how it works out.

I was just shooting my 94 SRC 30-30 yetserday. Just got it. Made in 1908. Bore is perfect. I shot the lyman 311041 sized .311 with 30 grs of IMR 4350. Learned this load on this forum. Nice mild take off, and man does she pack a nice punch in my dirt berm.
Chrono'd at 1700-1750fps. My spread was 2-7/8", the majority of the holes were 1/2apart.
Excellent hunting load! It does have a marbles rear tang sight, I think it makes a big difference with the peep closer to the eye.
Hope this helps!

PS this gun has 26 tally marks on the front H/G. Thats 26 deer, and 5 Tally marks at the bottom of the H/G, 5 elk. She's a shooter!

THE .311-170RF is regular lube grooves not the tumble lube groove.I just bought a 6cavity 3 plain base and 3 gas check. Nice mold...........Terry

Try the LEE 150gr mold mine drops about 162gr and .310 ish. Kind of weird yours doesn't like the LEE 170 gr. Both my Marlin336 and Win 94 '66 love those bullets. If I may what load you using? Mine is 28gr H 4895 and it pushes the 170gr to 1998 fps with zero leading. Averages about 2.5" at 100 yards in my scoped Marlin :)

I have tried several powdes with the LEE bullet. The best has been 29gr of H335 2080 FPS, Best group has been 4" at 50 yards. Using Hornady 170 gr RN and the same powder , the bullets touch at 50 yards. I am using a 1974 manufacture Win 94 20" barrel.

TCFAN, I checked out the .311-170RF mould on Ranch Dogs web site. I am going to order one. Thanks for the heads up. Have not paid alot of attention to his stuff for a while, guess I should check it out more often. Thanks guys for all the imformation.

RCBS 30-180 FN over 30 grains WW 748 is wonderful medicine for just about any game in the lower 48. It is a heavier version of that mold that someone alluded to a while back, I think he might have said 311-041, but I'm not sure. Anyways the RCBS that I have casts about 190 grains with wheel weights and is very accurate in my Winchesters.

My .311-170RF drops PB @ 176 and GC @172, .313. So far I get 2"H x 1"V @ 50 using LeveR powder. I had to rework the PB cause it wasn't quite right on the base.
