I am awaiting the arrival of a Chaparral 1876 45-60 I purchased from a forum member. A friend of mine has one,tho not same maker that I have been trying to help get boolits to work for.
Have been using his 300 gr Lyman mould and different alloys without much success. He was lubing them as cast with SPG and getting poor proups and leading. I finally got torqued and decided to lube them with WLL Carnuba Red,I found a big problem with first pass thru the lubrisizer, they are not very round and undersized.
I understand that there have been issues with Lyman moulds, and I am not wanting to start a debate. But from others experiences what is the best mould for this cartridge? I initially am interested in just smokeless and blackpowder later.

Slug the bore, and then you'll know if the Lyman is suited to the bore. You might have to get a bigger mould.

1886's didn't come in 45-60. I am assuming it is a 1876 in 45-60 or an 1886 in 40-65. The bullet you state being 300 grain sounds like a 45 caliber, so I would continue with the understanding it is an 1876.

Lyman moulds have historically been decent moulds, you may have have a bad one, but the 300 grain bullet should work well in the 45-60 as the 405 grain is a 45-70 bullet and too big for the 45-60.

My rifle is an original and it shoots the 300 grain very accurately...

I have an original '76 45-60 and shoot a 300 grain cast gas checked bullet sized to .458. It is very accurate (five shot group of 1 & 3/4" at 100 yards). Unfortunately, I bought these cast bullet off another fellow, so don't know what mould he used. I do have a Lyman 457191 mould that drops a 300 grain plain base bullet, but I've not used it yet.
