Hey all, I'm loading 20ga slugs in hornady hulls with 18.5 gr of wsf, spw wads, 255 gr hand cast 44cal sfn, there seems to be alot of hull space after loading, would putting an op card followed by 1/4" felt wad under the sabot work on eating up some hull space, and would it be safe to fire, I also roll crimp these rounds, any advise would be great.. Thanks all.

ITS BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT, THAN TO NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT.

Yes, and Yes, to both of your questions there. A hard card over the powder followed by a felt or fiber "crushable" wad and then the regular sabot or other wad-column stack on top of that is an excellent way to extend the length of your wad column stack.

It can also be done with just hard cards as well but if you do it with just hard cards you should use one card that is a smaller guage size card on top of the stack of cards before putting in a regular shot wad or sabot that has a gas cup seal on the bottom that has a hollow cup to it. Diagram below that explains it better then I just did in words.

Using a sub guage smaller size card as shown to fill the hollow bottom of the gas seal is only necessary when using hard card only. If you use a felt or fiber wad that will squish then it will form to fill the hollow no problem.
