Groupmembers,
A question popped into my mind the other day and I could not come up with the answer.

What cartridge/ rifle was the first to use a copper jacketed bullet?
Was copper jacketed bullets ever used with original black powder loads?
I was thinking possibely the .30 Government.

I could be wrong being that my memory is as they say "ain't what it used to be". I thought it was the Brits that first used a jacketed bullet. Just speculation on my part but likely one of the large calibers designed for African game. 30 Govt may be correct as far as the first on this side of the pond or possibly the first issued to the military.

The Swiss/French thing sounds right. Commercially, the 30-30 was among the first in the US.

Not as old as 1886 Lebel but 43 Reformando (Spanish) is pretty old.

I thought the Swiss went to Schmidt first and J words have been Rubin us the wrong way every since??? The 303 did have a pellet of B/P formed into the case and a jacketed bullet on top but that didn't last long. The french were the first with smokless powder but they used a paper patched bullet in the first ammo if I remember right.

10.4x47R Italian Vetterli M70.

Adopted in 1870 and "many of the cartridges were loaded with brass coated bullets".
